I love the Atheist Experience and Non-Prophets. I look forward to downloading and listening to every podcast. I also credit your show for finally giving me the courage to declare that I am an Atheist. I was born Catholic, but I've always questioned my faith and felt guilt over my lack of faith. Now after listening to the wonderful podcasts put out by you and your team, I don't feel guilty about not believing anymore, and one great bonus out of all this is that I'm not afraid of the dark/supernatural anymore!
Did you hear the China purchased Volvo for $1.8 billion last week? Illinois could have purchased Volvo with the $2.3 billion of tax payers money that Illinois is giving to religious organizations as grants. Interesting...
With 1100+ Illinois teachers being laid off because of $30,000,000 in needed cuts, maybe Illinois can re-evaluate the $2,300,000,000 of tax payer’s money that is given to religious organization in the form of grants. That is 77 x more money than what is needed for these cuts or 84700+ teachers worth of tax payer money being GIVEN away for nothing.
If Illinois would have purchased Volvo with that ear tagged grant money, that would have left $500 Million of tax payer money that could have been used for some good. One good think comes to mind right from the start: the $32 million state debt, which will end up being the reason for lay offs of 1000's of teachers this year.
What other things can be done with this money? Hell, it is our money, should we have a say on how it should be spent?
Huge fan here Matt - over the past few months I've listened to the last 2 years of TAE and the complete NPR archives, top stuff :D
Sometimes I almost wish I was there in Tx - here in my corner of Australia the religious stupidity mainly seems to happen in government, I sometimes wish I had something less removed to rail against! Yes, I actually WANT someone to try to proselytize to me :P
Anyhoo, keep up the excellent work, I might see you in the IRC chatroom at some point :)
I have finished a book about my atheist experience and I am about to submit my proposal to The University of Oklahoma for publication. If you are willing or know someone that would be willing to read a portion of the book please have them contact me with their name and address so I can pass that along to the OU Press. Yes I know it is OU but at least they are taking my transcipt. I went to Kansas State actually.
"We Are All Connected", quotes auto-tuned from deGrasse Tyson, Feynman, Nye, and Sagan. It was all over The Friendly Atheist and Pharyngula, but I daren't risk you guys not hearing it.
I DL'd Carl Sagan's Cosmos on iTunes for less than 30 bucks, I recommend it to everyone. He is messianic in my eyes... his curiosity, his scientific honesty, his idiosyncrasies.... I suppose I am committing some sort of True Scotsman fallacy, but if everybody were a little more like him, I'm convinced the world would be a better place.
