Shedding skin

I was christened nearly 50 years ago. I had no choice in the matter; but at least religion was not shoved down my throat by my parents (who are now in their 70s and atheist too).

Christianity was, however, unavoidable when I was at secondary school. You were only excused from the interminably dull daily assemblies (sitting on a hard, cold wooden floor for an hour) if you were jewish or hindu. At the impressionable age of 15, I was converted by a group of American evangelists who visited my school (in High Wycombe, Bucks, England). I was a lonely adolescent and it is no surprise that these warm, effusive people managed to convince me that 'god' existed. Of course, as soon as they all went back to the USA it didn't take long for my belief to evaporate.

Around two years ago, I finally discarded my skin of agnosticism and sold my soul to atheism. It was like a heavy weight had been lifted from me - I am extremely comfortable with who I am now; a free, rational - and, I hope - kind person, who can show care for others without justifying it in the name of some god or belief.

Help!

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 12:24pm 7 Comments

Hi everyone. Could do with some advice here. Last week I was holding an art session with a new group of people and somehow the conversation turned to religion. I said I was an atheist, and one of them said she was a christian (she was wearing a cross and had a fish tattoo on her wrist!). Now in my imaginary conversations, I always thought when I met a real god-botherer I would be able to destroy their beliefs with my wit and knowledge, but I ended up feeling belittled, embarrassed and… Continue

A collection of anti-theist scribblings

It was like a heavy weight had been lifted from me - I am extremely comfortable with who I am now; a free, rational - and, I hope - kind person, who can show care for others without justifying it in the name of some god or belief.

The only side-effect of my unconversion (?) is that I have become intolerant of believers, seeing them as eccentric and misguided. I get so angry about religion that I… Continue

Stuff and nonsense

Just going to add some of the stuff I have cribbed off the internet. Where possible I will add the source but some of these I just randomly collected so I am not able to attribute them to anyone.

Thus, god sent his only son earthward to be sacrificed in rather brutal fashion, so that humans could have their sins forgiven and be given eternal life. It is one thing to make this ridiculous claim that one man sacrificed himself—or was sacrificed by god, which was (confusingly)… Continue

Here's a gem for your (hopefully continually developing) collection in case you don't already have it.:)

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.” ~Stephen Roberts
