Ayaan Hirsi Ali - Opinions on her books?

I'm wondering what the opinions are here of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.  I've finished her book 'Infidel' on audiobook, and enjoyed it thoroughly.  I think atheists are really the only ones in any position to critically examine a religion without hypocrisy because we can avoid the 'well your religion is just as absurd/violent/sexist as ours' argument. See More

Suffering, Prayer and God's Will - Part 2

Having been a widow at 30 with two small children, I have experienced the christian response to suffering and death.  This is supposed to be the one point where all of this christian belief is vindicated -  where it all is worth it.  It was cold comfort to say the least.

There were so many people who wanted to help and they did so by praying.  I appreciated their desire to help.  Just not so much their way of doing it. I was still very much alone with our semi-private horror.  While…

Suffering, Prayer and God's will

I ceased to believe in god when I finally let go of the idea that somehow suffering can be part of god's long term plan.  After quite a lot of other sh1t happening, my 30 year old husband of 10 years suffered permanent nerve damage to his lower spine due to cancer.  While he appeared to everyone else to be reasonably healthy, he was in fact unable to urinate.  He also lost sexual function and partially lost bowel function.  He had to self catheterize for the rest of his…

wow - that's really great!  are you involved with the genetic engineering? pest control? organics?

maybe the science isn't 'religious' per se, but it is of the earth and therefore important somewhat spiritually in healing the earth.

all my grandparents were religious: greek orthodox, german catholic, jewish russian and polish. 

my parents (jewish and catholic) were non-religious til i was 11, when my dad went back to being jewish in a reform temple. didn't believe in god, but in the culture and holidays. but i don't involve myself in anything 'religious' at all. celebrate some holidays - cause of my son, but he argued with a friend in kindergarten saying there was no god - it blew me away! :]  

it must have been very hard for you with your atheistic views - families often don't react well to their children not being their religion. but this group has really helped me to feel more positive about being atheist - everyone is so open with each other. you don't have to worry about getting bad 'vibes' from people cause you're a non-believer or just plain hide the fact (like at work).

how are your kids doing at their schools?

hi lana - so glad you have joined our religion 101 discussion group. i look forward to what you have to say - especially your being a scientist. (what are you into?) so far, we haven't gotten deep yet, but it will evolve.

your story - well, it's hard to find the words. the way you and your husband found the strength to deal was amazing.  long ago, i came to conclusion that a god who allows such suffering as goes on in the world is either a sadist :) or not a god at all. ugh, how people can believe as they do is unfathomable. (maybe it has to do with smarts, although a lot of intelligent people are religious ??)
