A skeptical review of Forks Over Knives

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 4:20pm 0 Comments

Forks Over Knives presents the audience with the argument that a whole-foods, plant-based diet with no meat or animal products or refined foods is the way to a long, healthy, cancer-resistant, and heart-disease-free life. Forks Over Knives plays like a 1950s governmental instructional video, makes basic reasoning mistakes, and discredits itself by touting examples that no skeptical audience can take seriously.

Something Borrowed Review

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 12:14am 0 Comments

It is the choices not made that haunt the love lives of the characters in Something Borrowed.  The pleasantly adequate acting is no match for the formulaic plot, awkward dialogue, and strangely shallow characters that bring the maturity level of Something Borrowed down to that of a junior high school student’s love life.

Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is responsible, shy, and caring.  For years her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) has taken advantage of her.  Dex (Colin…

Book Review: The Good Atheist - That's what he/she said!

Posted on May 5, 2011 at 2:51pm 0 Comments

I bent the binding of The Good Atheist, Living a Purpose-Filled Life Without God, by Dan Barker, in hopes that I would either come out of it in some way affirmed or finally have a resource for a person struggling with the decision to let go of their faith.  When I closed the book, I felt like a sore eared member of the choir.  The majority of Barker’s book is an appeal to authority and celebrity, a mishap of astonishing proportion when speaking about, to, or for, a community that…

My Re-examination of Martin Luther King and Anti-Semitism

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 10:08pm 0 Comments

My life has presented me with no shortage of opportunities to re-evaluate my thinking, or to show me my short falls when it comes to my path of reasoning. It never comes when I think it will, nor will it present itself in a comfortable manner. My latest moment of clarity came when I asked a question of other people that I had not asked of myself in years, "Do MLK's accomplishments in the area of civil rights outshine his anti-Semitism enough we can call him a hero without shame?" It was not my… Continue

Vatican warned Irish bishops not to report abuse

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 9:56pm 1 Comment

DUBLIN – A 1997 letter from the Vatican warned Ireland's Catholic bishops not to report all suspected child-abuse cases to police — a disclosure that victims' groups described as "the smoking gun" needed to show that the church enforced a worldwide culture of covering up crimes by pedophile priests.

"Write more yourself" - I'm not a postaholic, if I have nothing to say I say nothing. "I've broken no rule" - because it's hoped that people aren't dumb enough to need rules. "I'm not going to stop posting them here and I won't be bullied by you not to" - because you're either too self centered too care, or you just don't give a fuck about ettiquette. There are many film buffs here, as you say. All of them have enough respect to post things into the groups that are of the appropriate interest - without prompting. The frontpage is the public face to the world, where newcomers stumble in, a lot of them taking baby steps back to the real world. What do they find ? Fucking film reviews / free advertising for mainstream trash. Thanks. You make us proud.

Darlin, It's my blog. It ends up on the front page as a feed. Get over it. I'm not breaking any rules and I think atheists go to the movies too. Seriously, get over it.

Yes, that's why they bookmark IMDB and have film interest groups on this site. But you're too important to be considerate, not like the common folk who respect their neighbours.

Thank you for your concern, LaRae. I stay in NorthTexas and by the time the storm gets to us it will probably be just a breeze...Actually they evacuated people from N.O.to here. Hopefully they'll be able to return safe to their homes by the end of this week. Seen any movies worth watching lately? I saw "Mamma Mia" in Spain when I was visiting. I don't remember seeing anything that bad in a long time. Watching Brosnan sing (or trying to) was interesting, to put it some way. I enjoyed the soundtrack though, and I've bought the CD (although I'm never been an Abba fan).

Aberdeen is nice, yet cold! LOL! I'm actually moving to London in a couple of weeks though - just for a few months before going to France for about 6 - 8 months.

I went to LA when i was in California too, which i liked but i'm not sure if i would like to live there - i think i would love to live in San Diego. I know Cali is expensive, but i doubt it could even come close to how expensive London or Aberdeen are, LOL. They are the two most expensive cities in the UK, how typical that my destinations of choice are always the most expensive! lol.

The Princess bride huh? I haven't seen that yet, but would love to since i love princess stories! hee hee.

Hi there! Thank you for the add! :)

The Bay area - is that the San Francisco Bay area? I went there a while ago an really liked it. I wasn't keen on San Franciso but enjoyed the surrounding area.

I'm hoping to maybe move to California at some point - i'd love to do my phd there but it depends on how expensive it is.

A movie reviewer huh? I LOVE movies hee hee - what's your fave? (if you have one - i always find it difficult to choose on in particular - just depends on my mood at the time, like music lol)
