Joseph P said… Ouch. Yeah, a high school student is hardly a peer. Work also isn't much of an environment for religious discussion. It's a bit different at my office, because over half of my department is atheistic. That kind of changes the tone of the workplace a bit.
Where are all of the old guard in your group? They provide a bit of a stabilizing influence, in most groups. Most groups are full of a bunch of old, white guys.
Christ. If it's a bunch of college kids like the ones you describe are running things ... meh. That's not the way we need to represent ourselves. They could stand to take their lead from groups like the ACA. You have to educate people about atheism and skepticism, before you can try the harder tactics. Most people in Indianapolis probably only know what their preacher has told them about atheists, and it doesn't sound like your guys are going to improve things much.
Well, damn. What do you do, in that kind of situation, short of moving?

Facebook might be useful if I had more out-of-state friends I want to keep track of. About the only people I'm that concerned about keeping track of are those of my extended family, mostly in the Chicago area. For them, e-mail works quite well. Considering my atheism would be all over my Facebook page, I'd just end up annoying my nun aunt, among others.
Don't know any like-minded individuals in person? You mean atheists? Seriously? Does Indianapolis not have an active atheist group?
Admittedly, it struck me as a little on the redneck side, for a city so large, back when I lived in the Chicago area. That may not be an entirely accurate impression, though, since I've only ever been about a dozen times, if you don't count the times blowing right through it on the way from Raleigh to Chicago.
What are most of the people you meet like?

Joseph P said… Heh, yeah, I figured something of the sort. I hope you're treating Sven reasonably well, at least?
I'd check out your Facebook profile for more info, but I've never been tempted to get an account, particularly after all of the privacy issues, and now the cookie abuse they've been engaging in. That's all just on top of my initial reason of not having any self-control and really not needing another time-sink.

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends.

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film. The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons. He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"! .
No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes. 'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands. Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
