"There's more at play than just right or wrong or smug presumptions of some metaphysical way of knowing.
There is a sense of moral superiority that leads the believer to feel morally superior to non-believers, and the desire to have another…"
"This is what is so ultimately frustrating about theism / atheism being thought of as a "debate." You cannot have a debate by first presenting a reasoned argument while having your opponent tell you he is simply right; that no amount…"
"The biggest problem is the disconnect. A believer will ask, "What would it take for you to believe..." and you can give them an answer based on evidence. When you ask the believer the same question they invariably say…"
"Many years back I made the mistake of starting a conversation with some guys on 40m doing a bible study net. Never again. I had not before then met such cantankerous, obnoxiously condescending & bitter people on the air. They even beat out Gary…"
"Kevin, I got one of those tract QSLs (unbidden) earlier this year. It was so wacky I seriously thought of sending it to the FCC; then I realized there are no disqualifying behaviors for amateurs except for the usual: deliberate and repeated…"
"I don't even bother trying to reply to the faithful any more. If they bless me I just say have a nice day and 73. Although when one sends me a tract in the mail for a QSL I will send them back one of the atheist tracts I've…"
"Emmett, write to me off-list for a cure for your dipole coax problem. As for the damned Christians pushing the prejudices and superstitions of the cult priests of ancient, tribal sky-gods, there's not much to be said there. Though I have…"
"I'm on 30 meters most nights, especially when it's not too cold. (My damn off center dipole is attached to a coax lead that I ingeniously cut to a length that makes it resonate as a third leg of the dipole -- thus it interferes with…"
"Yep. FB is a time bandit. Worse 'n reading the Bible. Or Oahspe. Although I will admit that talkin' with "real" Mormons in Salt Lake City was rather interesting. In a couple different languages. In the meantime: 1. Hamvention is…"
Probably have to be in person - my rigs are all old and busted (well, at least old...) - I haven't been on anything other than a cellphone for a long time - though I really hope to get something going again at some point. N4FFD is the call, just in case I suddenly get the bug. Where do you generally operate?
I may start trying to get some gear back together in a year or two. I was never very successful with HF, and my general ops were on 2M, but I have friends down south all over 220 and up, and there is my motorcycle comm system to think of... I may just get myself something in the tiny wavelengths again.
Religiion on the air... ugh. It should be considered the same as re-broadcasting. I was, however, married at my wife's home with three pastors, all three of which were hams. We used to kid them that their antennas were cross-polarised :-)
Thanks for the note - hope to meet up on the air somewhere sometime.
