I'm a professional Firefighter/Paramedic and have worked for the same Dept. for 24 years. Before then, I was a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT with a 3 year gap for the military as a Field Medic.
I would say I was never really a theist, I attended churches and bible studies trying to fit in. I couldn't force myself to accept it. I realized I was atheist about age 20, before then "I just didn't believe it".
About 5 years ago, I joined a meet-up and met 4 others. In 2 years there where 100 signed up and 6-10 people would meet most weeks. Today, we have 300+, 4 locations with events throughout the week. sponsor public education events, beach picnics, winter campfires and so on.

Awesome, glad to hear you'll be at the rally. I'm hoping to get a few of my neighbors to come out as well. It would be nice to get a good representation from throughout both the secular and non-secular communities.
Hi Ken! I'm Kris. As well as hosting the Aussie/Kiwi group here on Nexus. I'm also the media and communications consultant for the forthcoming "Rise of Atheism" Global Atheist Convention to be held in Melbourne in March 2010. The Convention is being organized jointly by Atheist Alliance International and the Atheist Foundation of Australia.
I wonder if you could let your South Flordia atheists know that tickets for the convention are now available online at the Convention website. We are expecting nearly 3,000 delegates, so this convention is going to be huge.
Confirmed speakers include: Richard Dawkins, AC Grayling, PZ Myers, Dan Barker, Peter Singer, Taslima Nasrin and many more.
Anything you can do to help us get the word out would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Ken. Thanks for the add. I see you're really active in South Florida. Let me know if there's anything going on in the Jupiter/West Palm Beach area.

Jane, thanks so much for your reply. It must have been terrible for you and your daughter having to spend your precious time with such religious nutcases. We also had lots of bad experiences with home school groups as most of them out there are…
