Atheism's Harm vs. Religion's Harm

Started this discussion. Last reply by Greg LeGore Oct 24, 2011. 165 Replies

When I discuss the harm done in religion's name with my sister, who is Moslem, she inevitably brings up the harm done in atheism's name, including Stalin in the process.  I am not sufficiently well…Continue

At last, a human right affirmed in the U.S.A.!

This isn't really a discussion topic, but I don't know where else to put it; and we are, after all, one large community, are we not?  At last, the Congress of the United States of America has…Continue

What's wrong with scientism?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Peter Brooks Dec 25, 2009. 51 Replies

In another thread, reference was made to some people's criticism of a position known as "scientism," and the statement was made that scientists aren't believers in scientism and, further, that nobody…Continue

Hey, I just now saw what you wrote on my friend request---sorry about that, It happened to my AIM too, I have no freaking clue what did it, my virus scan turns up fine, I'm on an encrypted connection, It's not like I hand my password out and the passwords are actually -different- from one another, but it's the same "iq test" thing.

Weird. And worrying.

Thanks for the welcome!  I've always wanted to be part of such an awesome club.  :)

I guess I don't have as strong feelings as you do about whether or not people should believe in god(s).  One way or the other, so long as they're happy and not trying to use it to bludgeon other folks or deprive them of rights.  Unfortunately, it's the bludgeon-wielding folk who create most of the media ruckus.

Thank you. These are near my house.

I hear you about the cold weather. I'm afraid I'll be stuck on this cold island for awhile. Luckily, summer is about to begin. Soon. Waiting.

I'd be interested in your essays. I studied philosophers @ university, I enjoyed it, but I've not kept up much since then. Rusty. I watch a lot of debates online (youtube) and listen to some interesting video makers (Theramin Trees, The Atheist Experience and Qualia Soup come to mind) - that's really all the logic, philosophy, arguments for reason I'm exposed to of late. I'm not a mathematician but I enjoyed Russell's "Why I Am Not A Christian" many years ago. I don't remember much of the formal bits (arguments for god, terms, so on), so it'd be interesting to familiarise myself with it again through essays, et cetera. Do you plan to share them publicly? How, if so?

I plan on reading "The Moral Landscape" as soon as it comes in at my library wait list, and "The Greatest Show On Earth" which will be in later (big wait list).

Thanks for the comment. RML
