Atheism's Harm vs. Religion's Harm

Started this discussion. Last reply by Greg LeGore Oct 24, 2011. 165 Replies

When I discuss the harm done in religion's name with my sister, who is Moslem, she inevitably brings up the harm done in atheism's name, including Stalin in the process.  I am not sufficiently well…Continue

In another thread, reference was made to some people's criticism of a position known as "scientism," and the statement was made that scientists aren't believers in scientism and, further, that nobody…Continue

About Me
Ask me anything you care to--I try hard not to take offense. Human beings are not mind readers, after all.

I am working on a collection of philosophical essays tentatively entitled "Why I Don't Believe in God...and Why You Shouldn't, Either." This, you can imagine, endears me to most folks.

I play chess (approximate USCF rating: 1900), and I am teaching two small classes of Chinese kids to play. I love bughouse, but almost never get to play.

Since my brother moved to Florida, I've played almost no tennis. But I'd like to. I like warm weather and abhor cold weather, and would like to move south or west myself.

I believe in loving thy neighbor, and therefore in governmental programs (that's *us* at work) to alleviate hunger, homelessness, poverty, and lack of access to decent health care. Why so many good Christians, loving their neighbors, don't favor the same things, is a mystery to me.

I like to laugh and love, a lot, as I would suppose most people do. I like smiles and warm gazes with beloveds, but currently have none. And I have been described as "a sexual creature."

My academic background: MA's in mathematics and in philosophy. Additional non-degreed work in each. But my current work is not associated with any college or university--I'm doing it on my own--although I am availing myself of the resources of West Chester University's library in so doing, and often chat with philosophy professors there (and also with one physics professor, who is a God-believer and who is impressed by the Fine-Tuning Argument).

The notions of intentional communities and synthetic families appeal to me intellectually, although I've never been part of either one.

Harlan Ellison once said, "The Golden Age of science fiction is twelve." I've read lots of Asimov and Bradbury and Clarke and Heinlein and Vonnegut, and lots of other science fiction. But it's been many years since I read much fiction, not counting Albert Camus's The Stranger and The Plague or Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit, which I've read for the sake of my essays.

As I said, ask me anything you care to. And: Readings and ratiocinations! Breathings and suspirations! Bleatings and articulations! Um, greetings and salutations!

Hey, I just now saw what you wrote on my friend request---sorry about that, It happened to my AIM too, I have no freaking clue what did it, my virus scan turns up fine, I'm on an encrypted connection, It's not like I hand my password out and the passwords are actually -different- from one another, but it's the same "iq test" thing.

Weird. And worrying.

Thanks for the welcome!  I've always wanted to be part of such an awesome club.  :)

I guess I don't have as strong feelings as you do about whether or not people should believe in god(s).  One way or the other, so long as they're happy and not trying to use it to bludgeon other folks or deprive them of rights.  Unfortunately, it's the bludgeon-wielding folk who create most of the media ruckus.

Thank you. These are near my house.

I hear you about the cold weather. I'm afraid I'll be stuck on this cold island for awhile. Luckily, summer is about to begin. Soon. Waiting.

I'd be interested in your essays. I studied philosophers @ university, I enjoyed it, but I've not kept up much since then. Rusty. I watch a lot of debates online (youtube) and listen to some interesting video makers (Theramin Trees, The Atheist Experience and Qualia Soup come to mind) - that's really all the logic, philosophy, arguments for reason I'm exposed to of late. I'm not a mathematician but I enjoyed Russell's "Why I Am Not A Christian" many years ago. I don't remember much of the formal bits (arguments for god, terms, so on), so it'd be interesting to familiarise myself with it again through essays, et cetera. Do you plan to share them publicly? How, if so?

I plan on reading "The Moral Landscape" as soon as it comes in at my library wait list, and "The Greatest Show On Earth" which will be in later (big wait list).

Thanks for the comment. RML
