I am a 21 year old student who is currently living and studying in the Bronx, New York. As soon as I was old enough to reason I realized that something wasn’t quite right with Catholicism and religious beliefs in general. I classified the teachings of the bible as fictional stories designed to teach people during ancient times. I never understood why adults felt the need to deceive me by attempting to convince me that the stories in the bible are factual and that people should live according to the bible. As I matured I realized that I felt this way because I am an atheist and I absolutely do not believe in the existence of god /god’s ,moreover that I do not believe in the after life or any other claims to explain human perplexities in religious terms. I have never perceived being non-theistic as a negative thing nor that the existential dilemma is something depressing once the idea of deities is removed. When asked the question about were I fit in, in terms of believes I no longer define myself as an atheist simply because it only explains what I don’t believe in and not in what I do. Therefore now I define myself as Secular Humanist , I feel comfortable that when people meet me they will be left with a better sense of what I stand for. Also, I strongly believe in upholding Human intelligence and ethical behavior against the threat of religion. I love America but I am frightened for its future if it continues to allow the influence of the religious to interfere with our rights. I have sometimes debated with weather I should prepare myself to live in another country ( France for example) because this country may not be the right country for me and for my children. But then again why should I leave a country I love because my believes are in the minority, I have decided to stay and fight for my rights ,and the rights of others to have freedom from religion. Secularism is the best future for this country and I have recently become an activist at my college by attempting to put together a Secular Humanist club.

Kat, I am glad your club is going well. I am also planning to attend the Richard Dawkins lecture this month. I never miss his lectures. He is a very intelligent person, I think he is great. :-)
