Greetings, Karl! I'd like to invite you to a group where we talk about anything on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D BTW, I'm a cat lover too.

Do you think that Terry Pratchett possibly loves cats? One of my favorite Discworld images is of Death petting a kitten. There's a new group here for people who love cats: Atheist Ailurophiles.

Well, you're right. India and China are on their way to being the next superpowers, and if you ask me, here in America,it is the conservative movement that is to blame for our demise in that regard. Conservatives here are basically feudalists.

I'm not bothered so much by India's growing power, but China's does scare me a bit, as well as Russia's increased imperialism lately. I trust India much more than the other two. I don't have anything against the Chinese as a race or anyting like that, but their sense of ethics and social responsibility is very different from mine.

As far as us being the cheap labor force for Asia, I'm not sure. I can't really say one way or another, but China has positioned itself as being the manufacturing center of the world. I can't buy anything not made in China anymore, and with tax haven's for overseas businesses, a lot of American jobs get outsourced. America is not longer a producer of much of anything -- not compared to China, that's for sure. We are all just basically consumers.

I've become increasingly anti-consumerist over the years. I understand that that is what makes the economy run, but I just don't care to buy much of anything any more. If you are interested, join my AN group CONSUMER ETHICS.

I agree with what you said, and from what I understand, that is absolutely correct. No, you can't put all the blame on man for climate change. But since the industrial revolution the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased steadily. Surely we can't deny that we have contributed to that. So if it can potentially lead to a problem, shouldn't we try to mend our ways? I mean, I know we can't control the whole earth, but if we see that we are contributing to the problem, then we should try to change what we feasibly can.

"...object to being told what to do by people of a country which is one of the worlds largest polluters and a country which shows no sign whatsoever of being willing to reduce its enormous consumption of resources." I understand, but some of us are trying to do the right thing regardless. But in America, corporations (and corporate greed) have such a strong hold in Congress that it is difficult to do things for ethical reasons or just common sense. That is why we don't really have any moral standing or influence in the world. And Bush made that worse. I think we need more change in the governement and in business, but getting that change is difficult. I think Obama is trying to address that, but let's face it, he's fighting an uphill battle.

"I also believe that we have to decouple the issues of climate change and envoromental impact of industry because I don't think that they are actualy as closesly coupled as some enviromentalists would have us believe." Well, I disagree, but what has led you to that conclusion? And yes, you are right, climate change is a complex issue, and not an exact science. Some areas are expected to become cooler or more fertile or wetter, but that is not expected to last indefinitely. I think that is why global warming is kind of a misnomer. It really is more accurate to say climate change.

Karl: I saw this conversation on Parenting Little Heathens, but I didn't want to join the group to make comments, so I thought I'd comment on your page. Plus, that discussion seems to be raising a lot of hackles, so I'm not sure I want to get in the middle of that. :) However, did want to comment on your comments.

There is nothing wrong with us most normal people refuse to take the blame for something which isnt their doing... I think that there is mounting evidence that this is our doing. Without the greenhouse effect, life would not exist on earth, so it is a good thing. However, I think the concern is the speed at which the climate is changing, and how it seems to be driven by man-made activities. Just consider that there are about 1 billion cars in China alone now, and goods and services are transported all over the world, round the clock. All those emissions have to have a cumulative effect. BTW, there is a good documentary that examines the history of climate change, and how we know when and what it was like, called A Global Warning?. It is well worth seeing to help understand the history of earth's climate.

...bullied by enviromental activists isn't going to help. Bullying never helps. Education and understanding does. I knew nothing about this stuff 5 years ago.

...the world is quite capable of looking after itself... True, and I don't think anyone believes that all life on earth would come to an end. Life would adapt. I think the biggest concern, and a very legitimate one, is that our way of life might drastically change for the worse, unless we find sustainable and earth-friendly ways to live. There are twice as many people on earth now as there was when Kennedy was innaugerated, a whopping 6.7 billion I believe. It is estimated that it will be 9 billion by 2050, barring major catastrophe, war, etc. A good documentary on that is World in the Balance: The Population Paradox.

Personally, I like having electricity and clean running water coming out of the tap. Just look at how many people in the world don't have those things. But at issue is the fact that they do want and need those things. The West wanted to export its lifestyle to China, and we have succeeded in doing that. The Chinese are now more affluent than they've ever been (in spite of their huge poverty rate). Yet that puts increased burden's on the world's resources. They deserve them as much as the next person, nation, etc., but we must use common sense planning and conservation measures to assure that life is as equitable and that resources are excessible for everyone. Thanks.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
