I've heard of others making a more abrupt break, tossing the whole god-concept in one go, once they discover that the Bible is wrong about a great many things.

Personally, my thinking would put me in that later camp, because it's either fundamentalism or nothing, for me.  If a book is the perfect, inspired word-of-God, then it must be perfect, or its authority is utterly broken.  Once you lose that divine authority, it becomes just a bunch of things that some guys wrote down, and you shouldn't believe any of it without outside confirmation and evidence.

Of course my opinion on the subject isn't worth a whole lot, since I was never a believer, even during my 18 years of forced Catholic church attendance and CCD.  Even at the age of 5, I was the sort of little bastard who kept asking how the adults knew the things they were telling me.
