Diving In to Joy

Posted on December 31, 2008 at 9:30am 0 Comments

When I first jump into the pool I take a moment to stretch out and enjoy the sudden cool embrace of the water. I let go of my mind, my worries, my neuroses, and just for that brief instant I feel completely calm and at peace with my existence.

I don't wonder, that when Virginia Woolf walked into the water, that she was seeking this same kind of release. I do wonder what drove her to seeking its permanence. Life is so precious.

Every once in a while, I'll approach this… Continue

I'm not crazy, I'm reality-challenged!

Posted on December 28, 2008 at 1:59pm 4 Comments

From now on, I will be using this term to refer to those people (including myself when appropriate) who are not able to distinguish reality from fantasy, for whatever reason. This ranges from the operational reality-challenged (like those who believe in supernatural entities, for example, and can still walk around and pass for normal) to the curl-up-in-a-ball-paranoid-delusional reality-challenged.

It's okay. It happens to the best of us, on occasion.

Wow. I could SO not… Continue

Waffling in Suburbia

Heart and head hurt
too young to be feeling this old
too old in my head to be so young and ignored
crying myself a river
wah! wah! wah!
I thought of another line,
but I forgot it because I'm losing my mind

Ah, I've missed writing bad poetry
Here's another, just off the top of my noggin:

Blasted bitches trading gossip
at the elementary school
That one, there, with the green hat.
Gonna go and give her a slap

Nontheist morality

Posted on December 14, 2008 at 12:00pm 14 Comments

I think that many atheists, when deciding or coming to terms with their own moral precepts, eventually fall into one of several philosophies for guiding their decision-making.

Socialism

Objectivism

Scientific method

Law and order

democratic rule

hedonism

(this list is by no means comprehensive, but I think that it encompasses a lot of us)

A socialist atheist follows the precept that the good of the community promotes the ultimate good of… Continue

Revelations from the swimming pool

Posted on December 6, 2008 at 3:40pm 0 Comments

I do love to swim. It gives me a chance to relax and enjoy my own thoughts without all the distractions of the world around me.

I thought of a much more poetic form of this early today around lap 25, but to my shame, cannot recall it now, and was (obviously) not able to write it down as it occurred to me. I thought I would remember, but alas, the words have taken flight. This is not as good, but the idea is there...

Like two sides of the same coin,

the best poetry… Continue

Greetings,Your Girl Friday! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

Yeah, it's a long, tedious story. That was about the only interesting part of the process of aconversion for me.

"I was at a "lock-in" at a religious brainwashing camp when I finally admitted to myself that I didn't believe a blasted bit of it. Yeah, a bit awkward, that."
