Joshua Colwell replied to Steph S.'s discussion Richard Dawkins & Ricky Gervais on Religion in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Fun to watch these two chat. Is this part of a longer conversation that is available somewhere?"

Joshua Colwell replied to Luara's discussion "Alone in the Universe" by John Gribbin in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"The Fermi Paradox is not something that can be rejected. It is a statement of fact: there are no extraterrestrials here. The "paradox" part comes from recognizing that while the Milky Way is vast, time is more vast. At very modest…"

Joshua Colwell replied to Luara's discussion "Alone in the Universe" by John Gribbin in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"The galaxy has been around for a long time. The fact that we cannot visit other stars is not the point. The question is, if it's possible at all (and it is), then why hasn't someone else already done it?"

Joshua Colwell replied to Luara's discussion "Alone in the Universe" by John Gribbin in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"The point of the Fermi paradox is that the distances are irrelevant because the length of time for interstellar travel is so great. It takes only a tiny fraction of the age of the galaxy to traverse the galaxy at even a very small fraction of the…"

Joshua Colwell replied to Luara's discussion "Alone in the Universe" by John Gribbin in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Yes, one resolution to the Fermi paradox is that aliens follow the Prime Directive."

Joshua Colwell replied to Luara's discussion "Alone in the Universe" by John Gribbin in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"That sounds like an interesting book. We really have no idea at this point if life is rare or not. The Fermi Paradox applies only to life more advanced than we (capable of interstellar travel). The ubiquitous nature of life on Earth even in extreme…"

Joshua Colwell replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion What's the Mystery Find on Mars? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"You have greater faith in what the instrument P.I. determines worthy of historical note than I do. I remain a skeptic about life on Mars, past or present, and would be astonished (and delighted) if they found anything suggestive of life there."

Joshua Colwell replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion What's the Mystery Find on Mars? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Yes, amino acids would not be much for the history books unless they were in some unusual form or if they were clearly of Martian origin perhaps.  http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17628-found-first-amino-acid-on-a-comet.html "

Joshua Colwell replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion What's the Mystery Find on Mars? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"They've found water at the poles and evidence of past water everywhere else, but no extant water from in situ measurements in the low latitudes. I don't think it would be that exciting either. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic. "

Joshua Colwell replied to Jim DePaulo's discussion What's the Mystery Find on Mars? in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"My guess is that they have found some water molecules, probably as part of a clathrate."

Welcome, Joshua! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Atheists who love Science!, Scientists in the Physical Sciences, Atheist Teachers, AstronomersGeek & Nerd Haven and Physicists.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since the climate is changing so drastically. Florida is especially vulnerable.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

On a personal note, I've developed an animated gif technique, sort of “pull quote marries slideshow”. Samples are scattered across various groups, but you can find them easily by going to my twitter account. Each tweet has a link (after the description and before the hashtags) to a visually rich example here at Atheist Nexus. If you like them, please follow me
