Josh commented on Matthew F.'s group 'Jewish Atheists'
Dr.D, given that stance, I'm curious as to your opinion on non-Israeli, non-religious Jews, such as myself. I consider myself, absolutely, to be a Jew, though I am not an Israeli (for now?) and I am certainly an atheist. Having read Mordecai…

Josh replied to Cecilia's discussion 'Am I Still Jewish?' in the group Jewish Atheists
If you want to be Jewish and/or feel that you are or should be Jewish then you are. At least from the perspective of Humanistic Judaism. You might also want to take a look at Reconstructionist Judaism which is similar to Humanistic Judaism in that…

Josh commented on Howard S. Dunn's blog post '911, Hitler, facial hair, gay, African, Asian, creature, grace, soul, spiritual, and the usurpation of valid styles and terms.'
Specific is a relative term, of course. ;) But there is certainly a fairly specific definition from which we derive our more modern usage in saying that a piece of music or a musician 'has soul'. Linguistic change tends to be…

Josh commented on Howard S. Dunn's blog post '911, Hitler, facial hair, gay, African, Asian, creature, grace, soul, spiritual, and the usurpation of valid styles and terms.'
Semantic bleaching is the proper linguistic term for the phenomenon: the watering down of the meaning of a specific word over time. More or less it can be described as a generalization of language. 'Soul' used to refer to a single, very…

Josh replied to Noah Petersen's discussion 'If Robots evolved to the point they could be used as sexual conpanions'
Who says they couldn't have rechargeable reservoirs of synthetic (or even natural) pheromones to emit strategically and advanced voice synthesizers capable of vocal undertones?

Josh replied to Chuck's discussion 'Do non-humans have rights?'
I don't really find the culling to be that problematic. As has been pointed out, even PETA agrees that it would be necessary. If nothing else, these animals are, by their very existence, a hazard to human (and animal) health.

Yeah, his tryst with Yar was definitely pre-emotion chip. It happened in the 1st season.

Josh replied to Chuck's discussion 'Do non-humans have rights?'
Which does not, of course, mean that it's not aware or even that it's not conscious. There is no reason to believe that a human nervous system, or even a mammalian one, or even a vertebrate one, or even an animalian one is the only model…

Thanks, but I've been here for a long time...

I think 'when' is what you're looking for, not 'if'. And don't forget Futurama! I can't wait for my Marilyn Monrobot!

Josh replied to Chuck's discussion 'Do non-humans have rights?'
'Plants don't have nervous systems and can't suffer.' This is debatable. Clearly plants do not have a nervous system as we understand it in mammals and other vertebrates and even invertebrates, but it is also clear that plants…

Josh replied to Sentient Biped's discussion 'Merry Christmas! Let's help fund a cult (Salvation Army)?'
Regardless of whether they're a cult, I suspect that a large number of people who might donate to them wouldn't, if they actually knew their positions on anything. They are against gay marriage, they are against abortion, they are, pretty…

I still have some invites. I'll need an email address to send it to. Doesn't have to be a Google one.

Josh replied to animus's discussion 'Welfare Reforms?'
It's not just interesting historically. If we're looking for ideas to improve welfare, why would we ignore ideas from the past that were never tried? As far as I'm aware, this idea hasn't actually been discredited, it just failed…
