"Your passion will take you a long way. I have been a teacher for 13 years. I would say that you just apply for schools and see what happens. Write a great essay about your love for science. Apply for financial aid. Find a program that will allow you…"
"Well, to be fair, I was offering my naturalistic take on the terminology and concepts. Some of them, like enlightenment, I do feel have been misinterpreted by the West. But some of them, like the concept of rebirth, certainly was a supernatural…"
"I've glanced at Buddhism from time to time but always felt overwhelmed with much of the terminology and the majority of the materials I have seen feel more religious than what I guess you would call natural Buddhism. (I have a strong distaste…"
"Don't just think about fincial aid, but consider student loans as well.Even with the credit market dried up, student loans should still be available. By all means, go talk to an admissions councilor at a college and try and get as much aid as…"

"That's been my experience, as well, Tom. I listen to the Zencast and Audio Dharma podcasts weekly, and I find they're largely the same. My knowledge of Buddhism has come primarily from the Thich Nat Hahn school of thought--also called the…"
"Thanks John - good post! I look forward to reading all of your blog - I just added it to my favorites.
My wife is a Buddhist, and I have pretty much reconciled my beliefs to hers by looking at Buddhism much as you have. She tends to take the things…"
There is nothing I'm more passionate about in all the world than science, and nothing I love doing more than telling people about it.But here's the problem--very deep religious indoctrination convinced my wife and I to get married early, start having kids, screw our education and get ready for the rapture. So, I'm just 25, but I've got two kids, a crappy job, and a record of flunking out my last year at University. How in the world can I overcome these obstacles? Everywhere I look online,…See More
Greetings, Jonh! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus lately. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.
I just read what you initially posted on the Atheist-Buddhist wall. I too am enthralled by the Buddhic philosophy. I was curious to learn about the physiological findings about the human brain etc that you mentioned also align well.
I started out a Phil/Theol Major back in College and didn't make it far into the theology before I had a crisis of faith. Started into Eastern Philo and Buddhism made the most sense. After 30 so years of studying it as well neuroscience, psych, Quantum Physics and anything else that explains how all of this works, I am in agreement with your position. But, I don't really like to call myself an atheist, as I don't "believe" there is no "god". The concept of a theist type reality just doesn't work at all once you advance past the typical metaphors of our youthful programming. Buddhism has helped me do that.
Hello! Ok, I went over this morning and tried again to fix it. I think it should be working now. Apparently, the embed setting was wonkey but it seems ok now. Thanks again, for letting me know about this!
Congratulations on escaping. It can be so difficult to do.
