JP Carey replied to Anthony Jordan's discussion Sam Harris: "The Moral Landscape"

JP Carey replied to Anthony Jordan's discussion Sam Harris: "The Moral Landscape"
"I read it and likEd it very much. At the time we debating what is "good" and this book offers valuable insights. Though the book does a fine job of describing what "morality" should be, what it didn't do was to tell us WHY…"

JP Carey replied to Vasanth Ra's discussion Can atheism replace religion?
"Atheism can not replace religion because it is a non-position, a zero.  The atheists would have to hang their hopes on a something, not a nothing. A +1 if you will, call it a philosophy of "realism" or "rationalism" and…"

The Primacy of Meaning

Can you stop a hardnose religious person dead in their tracks?

I meet a lot of people in their homes in my career. On occasion some of them will question me on religion.  It's important for me to remain tactful -but I don't want to lie and pander to them.  Recently I was in the dining room of a preacher with his family members around.  I was talking about morality and awareness when he spouted off "So where does God fit into all of this?"Luckily I've done my homework on these arguments and on the bible, and quickly responded with a "Well if you're…See More

Orderism

Orderism is a non-theistic philosophy of life, an "acolsophy".  Simple science and reasoning gives us the reason to be morally good and optimistic. Why do people do "bad" things?  What is "good" or "bad"?  Is there a real purpose and meaning to this life? What reasons are there to be a good person -other than just staying out of jail?  There are strong logical answers to these questions that will make a big impact on your life.Join the order! This group is a testing ground of ideas before sharing…See More

You might tell the sky fairy thralls that America was founded on the enlightenment thinking of Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, and John Locke. Thomas Jefferson's sentiments on religion: "Priests...dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subversions of the duperies on which they live."

Welcome, ! Glad you could join us. :D If you really need to hide your Atheism I recommend changing your name here to a cryptic one. Everything here is searchable. "Our current primal insanity" LOL.

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also like Refugees from the Bible Belt, ATHEIST BUSINESS NEXUS, Undercover Atheists, Heathen Geeks, Geek & Nerd Haven, Military Atheists, Atheist ArtistsAtheists who are Artists and A Trick of the Eye.

What is the religious purpose of life?

Posted on December 18, 2012 at 3:50pm 44 Comments

I'm writing something and I have to state what religion says about WHY were here.  How does God answer that? Why am I here?

So far I've put down: 1 to worship god. 2 to exert your free will and be judged by it.

It's been so long, I can't remember what the religious purpose of life is.  But I do remember all those stupid "Got Purpose?" signs everywhere.  Can someone enlighten me.

Why is There Even a Question About God?

Posted on November 19, 2012 at 11:51am 4 Comments

This struck me funny this morning as I was contemplating -lost in thought.  Even the question itself, "Does God exist?", is bizarre.

My girls will watch a questionably scary movie and immediately be wary of the dark rooms in our house.  I have several rational arguments to belay, to ease their worries.  Arguments that allow me to run through creepy old houses in the dark no-problem.  Here's 2 examples...

Me stating rationally: There were no…

My Official Statement

Posted on November 4, 2012 at 11:37am 2 Comments

Everyone in the U.S. Military at some point learns this official statement which helps them answer questions of a classified nature: "I can neither confirm or deny blah blah blah...". It's simple and automatic.

You know, it would be very useful to have my own official statement to practice for when someone asks "what religion are you?".  ...and here it is:

I choose to conduct my life NOT following FAIRY-TALES. I feel it is fine for…
