Need help with a kid

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 2:28pm 12 Comments

This has nothing to do with atheism, but I have become fond and familiar with the community here and I would like your collective opinion on a sensitive matter with which I am faced. I know a little girl at a chinese restaurant I frequent; she is the owners' daughter and she eats with me when I come in. Recently she mentioned that one of her parent's employees creeps her out, so I asked her why. She said "he tickles me," which immediately sent up red flags to me. I asked her if she had told…

These 9/11 conspiracy videos are worth a look, "but don't take my word for it..."

Posted on January 5, 2012 at 2:36pm 30 Comments

Let me first say that until this year, I fully beleived that 9/11 was the work of al-Qaeda and Bin Laden...because I had never bothered to look at any of the conspiracy theories. This year, I finally got curious as to why people were still going on about the attacks being a government job, so I spent a few days looking up videos and reviews. Quite a few of them were sketchy and I was able to dismiss the claims because I could conceive of alternative possibilities to many of the allegations.…

Obama signs the NDAA and ends American Democracy: RIP America (1776-2011)

I had such high hopes for this man when I voted for him. I was so tired of seeing white men in office, even being white myself, that I wanted him to show people that they needn't conform to societal stereotypes. But he was a Trojan horse, and has now done more harm to this country than anyone President before him. I can no longer call him my president, as he has sold me into bondage. He has transformed the home of the free into a military dictatorship. It is now perfectly legal for him to…

The "Good" of Moral Relativism

If you want to discover moral reason you should discuss morality.

The longing for purpose I've always felt is a direct consequence of religiosity. I have never had purpose and do not desire it! LOL As you mentioned somewhere else, no amount of future digitalisation of humanity will provide us with satisfaction on that point. We are already in the Matrix, our brains create the illusion of a purpose driven life, when in fact reality is all simple biology. I am a wayward ape. And if it can be said of some extinct species whose oversized appendages directly led to their evolutionary unfitness for life, I believe the same of humans, our enormous pompous brains will eventually be our death. Homo sapiens have thrived on this planet for 500,000 yrs without causing global catastrophes and extinctions, yet in the last few centuries, Homo sapiens is single handedly accomplishing what the rest of earth needed millions of years to achieve. I expect the near future of humanity has two options: extinction due to lack of resources or a significant change in the definition of "human" as you remarked with your earlier "definition of a leaf" analogy. I have many friends who are singulatarians and they anticipate with glee a future where humans are completely synthetic and we all live in massively overpopulated little manufactured biospheres, stating ants and bees as examples of human society. I dislike that analogy at the most fundamental level, are we closest to apes or to bees/ants???? Which society therefore best describes our true nature??? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

It not about right or wrong, but I for one to not aspire to a bee or ant life, I prefer ape life.

John,

No matter your philosophical bent,  ideas of strict determinism, it is only human to be peeved with the Z's of the world.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
