This stuff so sickens me, but what can you do? Here in Haywood county, the same shit hits the pages of the local rag, and the response of the citizenry is to cry out that Jesus is not being respected! Why is prayer even an issue at county Board of…

Ah, I shouldn't be surprised. But I can't help wailing in anguish over the ignorance of my fellow Americans. Oh, wait, we're talking about Texans right? No offence to Texans on Atheist Nexus, though. I am sure that the same poll in my…

Revolution is good for treating ear mites, but I have never liked it much for fleas, and it really won't control ticks much at all. For plain flea control: Advantage or First Shield (Vectra). For fleas and ear mites, plus intestinal worms:…

Addendum to this great list: acetaminophen is so toxic to cats that it would surprise me if a cat survived ingestion of a full tablet- they completely lack an enzyme necessary to metabolize it and it can destroy the liver. In general, avoid all…

Hey, don't let these kinds of things ruin anyone's opinion of Asheville. A popular bumper sticker states "Keep Asheville Weird". I think of it as being an island of normalcy in a sea of right wing Christian bullshit. I am pretty…

Vatican policy of hiding priestly pedophiles

I am sure this has been posted elsewhere in the past, given the old date of the article, but I have been curious to read this document since it was mentioned on Chariots of Iron or the AN podcast. Pretty blatant message to the holy: If you break the strict secrets of the Catholic Church, you will go to Hell. If you bugger small children, you must apologize, say a few Our Fathers and Hail Marys, and you can still go to Heaven. If you get buggered, keep your mouth shut or, you guessed it.Nice.…See More

I've read both parts as well, and frankly I am confused. I have a friend who is heterosexual, but who has a gay brother and sister. (Their father is a minister, a fact which makes me smile:) I wonder how complicated the genetic and…

Yeah, it rained. But according to the local paper, they were warned by the authorities that they could not burn books or they would be breaking the law, and would get fined. Wimps- if they really believed they were doing God's work,…

Cat mummies

Thumbnail
I saw this today in this months Nat'l Geo, and had to post it. The Egyptians must have really loved cats- this opening stuff about the hundreds of thousands of cat mummies is amazing. How long must it have taken to accumulate so many mummies that the English actually used them for fertilizer on such a grand scale?http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/11/animal-mummies/williams-textSee More

About Me
I have been a non-believer since my teenage years, when I started to learn what my church (Catholicism) was guilty of over the past 1500 years or so. This opened the door to all the questions about what religion is all about, and quickly realized it was a tool to control people when those in power weren't looking. Still, it has been a slow process over the years from really believing in it all, to total amazement that anyone believes it at all.

I live and own a business in the Bible Belt, so I don't advertise my lack of faith, but I find some solace in the community at Atheist Nexus. I hate being anonymous, though.

Hi CatDoc. I did take my dog to the vet today and he confirmed that my dog probably has degenerative myleopathy. Clinical diagnosis is based on ruling out other diseaseas. He did try her on Rimadyl 75 mg bid for a week. If it was any type of arthritis she would have improved. The vet checked her reflexes and they are hyper, more reactive. Her hips seem to be okay and along the spine area too. Could this still be hip dysplasia? Would x-rays help? He did mention about doing x-rays. I have read that a defininitive diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy is only ever determined postmortem.

Catdoc99, I’m not the official welcome wagon, but I do spend a lot of time on A|N, so I’ll take the liberty to welcome you and tell you a little about the site.

There are three ways to join in the conversations here. You can use the CHAT ROOM, or you can post a discussion in either the FORUM or in one of the GROUPS. The FORUM has different categories for posting discussions, and it is open to everyone here. To post a discussion or comment in a GROUP, you must first join that group.

There are over 500 groups so far, so just about any area of interest you can have will be represented. There are regional groups, groups for ex-Christians or ex-Muslims, and groups for pot smokers, bikers, singles, gamers, the LGBT community, and pet lovers. Groups of common interest include: music, science, writing, politics, Chomsky, Dawkins, philosophy, morality, ethics, atheist activism, cinema, human rights, memetics, sexuality, history, race & culture, gardening, vegetarianism, books, beer, propaganda, Cynicism, Objectivism, news, anime, Doctor Who, free speech, the NFL, Carl Sagan, psychology, Humanism, science fiction, horror films, gun owners, Star Trek, and much more.

You are welcome to start your own group, but I might suggest that you first check to make sure that no such group for that particular interest already exists (for example, we already have four LGBT groups).

I've started ten groups here (no comments my OCD, please), so please join any you think you might be interested in: HERCULANEUM: A PLACE FOR MEN, FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN YEARS AGO, THE KNIFE & FORK, HUMANE ATHEISTS, CONSUMER ETHICS, A TRICK OF THE EYE, ODDITORIUM, ARS POETICA, LOVERS OF SHAKESPEARE, and LINGUAPHILES & SESQUIPEDALIANS.

When commenting in a group, be sure to select FOLLOW at the bottom of the screen so that you’ll be informed of follow up comments to either the discussion, or to your comments. Also, the unspoken preference on A|N for responding to the comments of another member tend to be that you copy the text to which you are referring, paste it in your comment, italicize it, and then write your response below that. That way everyone knows to whom or what you are referring. You should also activate all links or URLs you post.

The best way to see what’s going on elsewhere on the site is to monitor the LATEST ACTIVITY feed on the right side of the screen. You’ll see new members announced and the conversations that are attracting the most attention.

Again, welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy it here, as I do.
