""gods, faith, worship or churches" is precisely what makes a belief system a religion.  Here's an example: many Americans hold an exceptionalist view about America - that it is special, or even superior.  The American flag…"

WHAT MATTERS MOST

Posted on January 2, 2012 at 10:49am 1 Comment

I would like to start this year off by asking everyone..."what matters most" to YOU?

A little while ago, I read an old book by Hyrum W. Smith, the co-founder of Franklin Covey. That book was titled..."What Matters Most". Among other great points in the book, Mr Smith explained, that there just wasn't enough time in one day, to do all the things, that we "say" we want to do, each day.

Take emails. We receive hundreds of…

Hello Joe! I joined your group! I'm interested in reading that book. I hope to see you here on the site.

I just though you might like to befriend a new member interested in Alain de Botton's new atheism, Gary Mensah. We need to generate a community for Atheism 2.0 here. I noticed your Religion for Atheists group hasn't had any traction. It competes with an established group, The Church of Atheism. Perhaps if you changed the description to focus on Alain's Atheism 2.0, and the two of us joined, we could form a nucleus for such a group. Just a suggestion.

What a relief! I'd forgotten that I had to learn that lesson too when I started in social networks. At first it seemed unreasonable to equate bold with shouting, but later, after I'd acclimated, I felt the same way.

We do appreciate your voice and want to continue to hear your opinions, Joe. You're bright and have a lot to contribute.

But, replying with all bold is poor manners. It's the internet equivalent of a shout, and gives others the impression that you're afraid nobody will hear you unless you communicate at the top of your lungs, as if you're used to being ignored. We want to hear from you and won't ignore what you say. All bold gives people the impression you're a bit needy and insecure. I for one have a harder time reading and comprehending an all bold message. It also takes away your ability to show emphasis. Please confine your replies in Hang With Friends to regular type excepting for the particular passages that you actually want to emphasize.

Thanks for you attention.

Welcome to Atheist Nexus!

Nexus has many ways for members to be involved, make friends, learn, and express yourself.   The welcome center is composed of Nexus volunteers, sort of like greeters at your favorite store.

Get to know people with similar interests by searching on Groups.  Use the search box on the Groups page, or browse through the many pages of groups, to see what's there.  There are Nexus groups for various states, cities, countries, ideas of personal expression, hobbies, and many other groups.  Get to know people based on what you enjoy, or what you have in common with others.

Ongoing forum discussions are of more general interest than the groups.  Switch toforum categories for a somewhat organized format.

MeetupTo find local groups and make friends or chat, Meetup.com is a great place to locate groups or start one.  (note, Meetup is not connected to AN).  Join Meetup and search on a key word, such as atheist, atheism, skeptics, freethought, to see if there is a local group.

Support nexus by going to Amazon.com through the site (see the amazon box on the right).  Buying from Amazon via the Nexus site does not increase your cost, but results in a small fee going to Nexus.

Terms of service helps you know the "rules".  You can also find the TOS on the bottom right of the main screen.

The right sidebar shows recent posting activities and discussions by Nexus members.  Click on "more" at the bottom for additional activities by members.

If you have general questions about how Nexus works, how to find what you want, or other questions, feel free to ask me or another volunteer member of the Welcome center!

Enjoy.
