I once was blind...

Many atheists start as believers in some kind of religious doctrine but eventually come out of it. I'm one of those. I was raised by my devout grandmother and my abusive, alcoholic mother. Grandma told me that if my faith was deep enough, prayer would see me through any crisis. So I attended the local United Methodist church, went to the youth group meetings and attended Boy Scouts in the church's basement. I even learned to bake so I could contribute to the church's coffers (we were too… Continue

Greetings, Jim! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus since Aug. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds,Hang With Friends . :D You might feel more at home.

Jim, please consider joining my new group HERCULANEUM: A PLACE FOR MEN. Herculaneum is a group where men can discuss and explore the ideas, goals, demands, ethics, sexuality, and nature of manhood and masculinity. It is a place where we are free to be ourselves, and discuss the issues most important to our identities as men.

I have already started two discussions to get us going: How do we define manhood in the 21st century? and Rites of Passage: A Lost Ritual?.

This is a private group, and discussions can be viewed by members only. Membership is open to men only. Please check it out.

An Atheist Ham club sounds like a good idea! I haven't been on the bands for an awful long time - miss it sometimes.

The chat is really acting up. I was replying to your comment about your father not knowing about your atheism. Is he deeply religious?

Thanks for the friend add. I haven't seen Dean or Kris in way too many years. I'm glad the planetarium gig is working out well for you. You might want to introduce yourself to Richard Valcourt in the sff group. He does volunteer work at the visitor center at Mauna Kea.

Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film video

Posted by Debra Stevenson on May 21, 2013 at 2:37pm 0 Comments

There is a video of the Pope's 'exorcism' caught on film.  The man isn't demon possessed, there are likely no 'real' demons.  He's just delusional and doesn't want to accept personal responsiblity for his own behavior for his own dysfunctional life.

Do you support 'traditional' marriage, vot now ad

There is an ad that reads ' Do you support 'traditional' marriage? Vote Now"!  .

No, I don't support 'traditional' marriage because there is no such thing. I support heterosexual and same-sex couples marry each other legally , yes.  'Traditional' marriage promoters largely do not believe that heterosexual women are co-equal to their husbands.  Their only purpose in 'traditional' marriage is to sexually satisfy their husbands if they can and raise children and do all…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
