J replied to Nola Maxwell's discussion He was needed in heaven?
"Right. It takes time and work to excise the scar tissue. Certain cues left me automatically raising my hand to begin the sign of the cross for years, but just now, I had to pause and work hard to come up with the term for that, because…"

Welcome Jen!  How's life for an atheist in Eagen?

I understand deconversion is a long painful process.  I'm curious what put the first crack in your catholicism?

A formerly-catholic friend just told me that it was her atheist friends' wisecracks about the religion.  But then my friend questioned the effectiveness of such wisecracks. Kind of contradictory.

Does it take good-natured "ridicule" to shake a devout catholic's unquestioning belief and get them to start asking questions?  Or does ridicule make a catholic bury his head deeper in the sand to block out reason?
