About Me
I'm interested in bettering the world through such tiny revolutions as:

1. Expanding the Atlanta bicycling community, rolling in solidarity with Critical Mass, organizing meandering bicycle rides, cranking through alley cat races, partnering for relay races, cruising century rides, and generally being my own engine

2. Discussing rhetoric, epistemology, philosophy of language, linguistics, lexical semantics, etymology, modal logic, ethics, aesthetics, and value theory

3. Dicking around with language and languages. This includes glunking together odd, sticky narratives that move your heart in unusual ways; summoning monstrous hyperboles, squishing together peanutbutter-and-jelly-like portmanteaus, burbling onomatopoeia, and drawing plausible metaphors

4. Creating, protecting, and maintaining parks; raising urban forests, and making space for people to connect with one another

5. Studying arboriculture, orchidology, horticulture, botany and other life sciences for insight and wonder in the world at large, but building terraria for the smiles and curiosity of my niece and nephew

6. Thinking about Marxist theories on sport, athletics, and community; playing bocce or soccer; living out the ideas behind parkour through freerunning and tracing

Bocce This Sunday

Posted on July 17, 2008 at 10:59am 1 Comment

Bocce's an Italian yard game with a history going all the way back to the Roman Empire. Bocce has survived the ages because it's fun, simple, and doesn't contain copious amounts of lead like sapa*.

I put together semi-regular bocce games. If any of y'all want to join us this Sunday evening, then here's what ya need...

Date: Sunday, 20 July 2008

Time: 1900 -2100

Location: The bocce court next to Vickery's in the Glenwood Park development (933 Garrett Str. SE, Atlanta,… Continue

I like your bio. I enjoy language as well. I read The Professor and the Madman this year. Simply written, but entertaining. I also read Talking Right by Nunberg, and would like to read more of his work. I am also interested in the environment, and taken a lot of steps to lower my carbon footprint. Raising money right now to plant trees at a local elementary school. We planted 8 last year.

I started two groups on AN. Lovers of Shakespeare and Ars Poetica. Please join if you are interested. I welcome your contributions.

What is a CSA? Melon balls in lemon squash? I've never heard of lemon squash. Hmm... you can't ever go wrong with cookies!!

I studied German and Spanish... 7 years ago.

Hand-squeezed limeade and fresh-baked almond cookies? Wow, will you be my mom? Just kidding!

I like to organize and sort things, so eventually I figured out that cataloging might just be perfect for me. For undergrad I studied languages. :-)

Have you made a park without mosquitoes or ants yet?

Jasen,

I may have to move to Atlanta - damn few atheists (or open ones) around my parts. And Atlanta seems to be getting represented well here. Good to have you around.

I don't know many librarians, to be honest. An amateur historian working in a medical library? It's interesting the places we land. I hope you're having fun playing bocce right now.

Hello Jasen,
Fellow Atlantan here. Take a look at http://www.AtlantaScienceTavern.com to find some more folks interested in science and reason.

We just started the group and are looking forward to its success!

take care,
Josh

It really related more to the fact that a lot of people might think you're a fabulous person, you build a friendship then look at you as if you're revolting when they find out you're an atheist. It's awkward and a lot of people have been taught that no matter how nice they seem (it's a devil's trick!) atheists are evil. end of story. So yeah, friendships are a little difficult.

LoL Your description of the women setting you up on dates made me laugh :P
