Ruth Anthony-Gardner replied to Jared Lardo's discussion 'Please give me your input on a religious dream I had'
When I have a dream of this type I interpret it as an indication that I "get" the intellectual objection to the nonsense at the gut level, i.e. with my lymbic system and reptile brain. In other words I take it as a symptom of being well…

Jared Lardo replied to Ara Tidwell's discussion 'Employee screening for common sense with religious issues.'
The "correct" answer for number 2 is in error.  A cross was, at the time of its pertinence, a tool of execution by the state.  For a killing to be murder it must be specified as illegal under pertinent laws (of the time and…

Please give me your input on a religious dream I had

In a meeting of a small number of people convened for some forgotten reason, I was present, and another present was for some reason sort of giving an impromptu speech on how to learn things about Mr. Yahweh.  She said something like "You can't learn correct things by combining known facts together and examining their implications.".  Dream-me interrupted or interjected, objecting that that's exactly how we come to know anything and is exactly how science works in the composition of theories. …See More

At some point, some guesswork comes into it and you have to make up arbitrary figures, e.g. for the rate of mutations or for the proportion among mutations of beneficial, neutral, and detrimental mutations.  If you set such-and-such a constant…

Jared Lardo commented on Ivo Coues's blog post 'An Atheist at Dinner'
I got roped into a scenario where some obscure relatives of mine were performing one of these rituals.  I had no idea what was going on when I was asked to join in with this circle of hand-holding that formed.  It was rather…

You have reminded me of a book I'll never finish reading.  I think it was The Stuff of Thought by Steven Pinker.  Whichever book it was, the "factive" nature of certain verbs--in particular, think and know were focused…

You make me facepalm.   The reason for adopting and for following vegetarianism isn't fundamentally for reasons of a supposed moral high-ground in all cases for all people all the time everywhere.  That reason is completely…

Jared Lardo replied to Marc Draco's discussion 'Is a hen's egg alive?' in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
I'm not quite sure if an unfertilized egg, being a single haploid cell, can be called an organism: it doesn't even have pairs of chromosomes; just one of each.  Of course, though, it can surely be called "alive" in the sense…

Jared Lardo replied to Sandy's discussion 'Obedient wives club: Good sex to keep hubby happy, curb social ills' in the group Atheist News
Frankly, Sandy's words came across to me more like something directed at the members of this "Obedient Wives Club".  I don't see any misandry in it whatsoever.  It seems like a question asked in irony to those women who…

About Me
I'm an intellectual formerly living in a veritable intellectual vacuum. A fish out of water, I gasped for breath. Or for whatever it is for which fish gasp.

I love music, I love creating it when I have the inspiration, and I love dissonance in it. Cowardice and conformity are wholly repugnant to me. I viciously fight for right and vigorously detest those too lazy to fight for what is right.

I analyse things without thinking about it. A lot of people do social things--such as greeting others--in the same mold of inevitability and instantaneity in which I analyse things. Like red and blue making purple, it's a one-step process, and I am constantly engaged in it.

What best defines how I operate is this: When a disproportionate-to-the-effort-required benefit is available, it is a moral outrage to not take it. The big deal that I make out of slight errors is comparable to the dissonance between two pitches one semitone apart.

My birthday's just another day to me. After the New Year Day, I screw up the year; after my birthday, I screw up my age.

My really fucking passionate writing style

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

When I joined this site, I posted the voluptuous, biting thoughts I had without restraint.  After a few days or weeks, I ceased censoring myself as well, letting out every little fine grain of hatred, irritation, or whatever that I had in me whenever I commented on whatever thing.  My, uh, creed, I guess, was as follows:

When you soften your speech and alter it for the sake of others, that is a highly arrogant thing.  Actions speak louder than words, and any action of…

"God is Love"

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 4:30pm 0 Comments

There came a point in my life one time when I loved everything in a right-side-of-the-brain swimming elation.  I woke up and I was in love with/toward not only the person who had been the target of such emotions of mine in the recent past, but also everyone else.

I even, though it was painful at that time to even realize it, let alone to admit to it, loved the people that I hated.  Now, those who I hated, I hated dearly.  They were and, I…

Weather

Posted on October 14, 2009 at 11:00pm 0 Comments

The weather in these parts varies outlandishly throughout the year. I've heard it said that there are two seasons here, but simplifying it down to Hot and Cold does no justice to the swarm of retched weather that we who live here have to endure:

In early January, there is high wind, dry, blowing, extremely cold, and biting. This wind is like a blundering, uncoordinated aspie in a chemistry class lab to a fragile piece of glass equipment; the slightest touch by it provides such damage… Continue

Why Final Fantasy XII is great

Posted on July 18, 2009 at 12:48am 0 Comments

Spoiler goodness for 1984, FFX, and FF12.

The battle system pwns. In all the ways that "pwn" means. The battle system defeats and embarrasses (in such a way that the defeat and embarrassment feed off one another reaching an unusually high level of reaction) all other battle systems in comparable games (that I've played (which, I admit, is limited to FF12, FFX, and FFT&A)). The battle system in Twelve kills the battle systems used in comparable games, as it kicks total ass; being… Continue

Greetings, Jared! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus since April. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

Forebearance please Jared, computer course in the pipeline. I've only just arrived at being able to cut and paste at all, i will improve honest. The only time I've worked with computers was 35yrs ago and we had to start it up by entering a binary code plus it was only a retrieval system. So no more sighing one will get around these problems.

Hi jared. Please excuse a certain incoherence as the abstract is not always easy to pin down and i'm largely a self taught man (pause while you feel awful now; shame on you). The soul of the poet in me can make me elusive and effusive.
