Well that's damn disappointing! Another urban myth killed by a nasty ugly little fact.

Janet Holmes replied to FreeThinker's discussion 'Judges, chapter 11 - God allows a human sacrifice'
The thing I don't understand about this is that I was always told as a kid that you can't make deals with god! You just have to do what you know is right and hope for the best. But this is exactly what Jephthah did, and he got what he want…

Yes and if players of Dungeons and Dragons kept insisting that the real world live by the rules of their game and getting laws passed to make sure we did then maybe the rest of us would join in with their arguing of arcane technicalities. Ridiculous…

Janet Holmes replied to Hekate Moon's discussion 'Islam Liberates women according to the Koran'
Just by sitting next to the stand with a full veil on she gives a clear indication of what liberation means to her. It means she must hide herself away from the gaze of men lest she be responsible for them raping her. Interesting new definition of…

Janet Holmes replied to Jezzy's discussion 'Death'
I look at it this way. Do you remember what it was like before you were born? It wasn't painful or unpleasant in any way was it? So that's what it's like to be dead. It doesn't bother me. Since I never believed in an afterlife I…

Janet Holmes replied to EccentricSM's discussion 'Has anyone else been an atheist as long as they remember?'
I have a theory. I reckon about 10% of people just do not have the necessary wiring for believing in gods, in the past they kept quiet because they knew which side their bread was buttered, several were popes. Another 10% is hardwired to believe in…

Janet Holmes replied to EccentricSM's discussion 'Has anyone else been an atheist as long as they remember?'
I don't think it's a small minority in Australia, most people don't go to church and almost none of my friends are religious. I'd guess quite a few would say that they've never believed in a god. I know I haven't.…

You sir, have been reading too much Rodney Stark! A man who pretended to scientific rationalism but who revealed his true colours recently by converting to Roman Catholicism. Dr Stark is a fine social scientist but as an historian he has an…

Janet Holmes replied to Jennifer W's discussion 'Do you believe Jesus existed?'
C. For those who say they don't know because they don't have the info may I recommend 'The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man' by Robert M Price, and 'The Jesus Puzzle' by Earl Doherty. There are others but I really…

Governer de Kretser talked to Victoria's Police Chaplains' Annual Conference about ethics and religion.

Victoria's Governor spoke to the annual conference of Police Chaplains and said a lot of nonsense unfortunately. First he said that because church attendance is declining we should think of teaching ethics in schools and other educational institutions. Well I'm all in favour of teaching ethics but what does it have to do with declining church attendance?Church attendance in Australia is about 7.5% and falling. A figure I'm very proud of. It makes Australia one of the most secular countries in…See More

The usual substitute is two teaspoon baking powder per cup of flour. So you'll need four teaspoons baking powder altogether.

What the hell is an atheist church?

Posted on July 16, 2009 at 12:22am 7 Comments

Is there something to worship? Will we have cake stalls and car boot sales? Raise money for charity? Congratulate ourselves on our faithlessness? Or just have regular piss-ups?

I know conventional churches do more than just worship invisible beings but that is meant to be their main purpose.

I definitely wouldn't want to call it a church ffs. This sounds like the sort of thing accomodationists would set up in order to try to camouflage their atheism. "Oh yes I go to church… Continue

Welcome to Atheist Nexus with its 8000 good friends.

A useful science group to join, with its 125 discussions and numerous video films, is “ORIGINS” (Origins: Universe, Life, Humans, Evolution, Religion....).

One discussion (over 70 posts) is "Proud to be Atheist".
There's much to feel good about
because atheists and humanists hold the intellectual high ground—far from the mental slavery of superstitious people who submit to a narrow-minded controlling clergy with their imaginary god, heaven and hell.
