Caring Christians Offer Me Help - No, Really.

I am going to the Veterans Administration Wednesday for surgery on my right hand to relieve Dupuytren's Contractures, the second time in four years. This time there is a difference. Four years ago I lived in Oklahoma, where as an atheist my Christian neighbours mostly ignored me; those that didn't offered to pray for healing for my hands (rather than thank a skilled surgeon). Now I live in a tiny village in the…See More

Study: US Postal Service Biased Against Atheists

http://www.atheistberlin.com/study Atheist Shoes is a company in Berlin (footwear for the godless). After receiving many requests from customers in the USA asking they not seal packages with their branded packing tape (it repeats the word “atheist” on the tape) because of delays and loss, the company decided to do a test to see if postal workers were interfering with the delivery of the company’s packages, chalking up their customers’ concerns…See More

The Real Danger of Going Out in Public: Influenza.

My wife and I had an absolutely marvellous time at the Wyoming Mensa Dine-Out SIG in Cheyenne the other day.

A real city (with real traffic lights—it took a minute to realise those were not street corner decorations), fine food, fine conversation, and the chance to gather with other Mensans…

Not shovelling my walks for the church goers today.

Last week when it snowed, I shovelled my walks, primarily for the church-goers across the street.

Today the wind chill is -26 F. Nope. Not doing it today, city trustee or no.

My first full City Council Meeting as an Atheist Member Tomorrow

The religious will frequently argue that an atheist is inappropriate as a government representative for various reasons (you need a moral compass, ad nauseum).

The village clerk came by my house Friday afternoon with the agenda for the meeting. This will be my first full meeting as a councilman on the Village Board. Let's take a look at the agenda, and see where a "Christian Viewpoint (tm)" would be of use (more…

I had some trepidation in displaying my  "Science, Reason, and Secular Values" poster, plus "atheist" stickers, in my windows. Not to mention my "imagine no religion" bumper sticker. I feared "retaliation" of some sort. But nary a phone call or letter has been received. Whew!

Thank you James.  I've been "through" Nebraska a few times driving from midwest to NW.  My 16 year old cat escaped from her carrier at a motel in Lincoln, never to be seen again.  That was 10 years ago.  I still miss her.  My car broke down somewhere on a long stretch of road and I had to hitchhike to the nearest town.  The vast stretches of fields reminded me of the ocean, only greener and quieter.    Fortunately there was a nice person who was not a hitchhiker-obsessed serial killer, who picked me up.   I remember most the spicy fragrance of a massive feedlot that wafted past me for many miles.  Oh the memories.
