"One of my favorite common Xtian cliches is "Everything happens for a reason!"  No; everything happens from a cause.  Not the same at all.  They think, if you're miserable, you're just being prepped for something…"

"Yes, the devil is a crafty guy in a red suit, poking you with a pointy stick to make you miserable every time God's back is turned (which is often, apparently). Bad things can't possibly be the result of ordinary circumstances playing out…"

"That one was pretty creative.  I've heard similar things though.  Religious drivel is like a topical ointment to be spread upon your woes and make it all better."

At work today, two co-workers were talking about the rough time one of them was going through.   The woman replies that there must be something wonderful about to happen as the devil is trying to rob her happiness so that she can't see it.    What???!!!   Wow, the things that they come up with just make my head hurt.

"Exactly.  So he makes his image appear on a wal-mart receipt?  He couldn't appear in person somewhere and cure cancer, stop a disaster, etc.? Their obsession absolutely astounds and confuses me."

I've hesitated adding this discussion because of the tragedy that happened beforehand, but here goes:We live near Joplin.  My husband went to help a friend whose home was destroyed by the tornado.  While helping clean up, he talked with his friend's daughter.  She told him a story: While cleaning debris, she found a small sculpture of baby Jesus in his manger.  She picked it up, cleaned it and put it on top of a board that had lodged itself in their yard.  The next day, a church group came by,…See More

Hello Jaci, and a big welcome to the site of the sensible, rational people of the world who are gathering here.

This great place has thousands of bright people like yourself who recognise religion for the superstitious force and farce that it is---and that gods exist only as fictions inside people's heads.
