Andrew Stewart replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'The Bible as literature'
In my post-Catholic perspective, Christianity is an evolution of the Greek myths, they had previously gone from Greece to Rome, where the Gods and Goddesses were renamed previously (as in the case of Poseidon=Neptune), so now God is Zeus, Jesus is…

Tonya Wynn replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'Is free will really a supernatural concept?' in the group Free-Will DNE
I agree with Howard: If there is no freewill, there is no morality.  Can I use my genes/background, Ajita Kamal, as an excuse for being late to work or not doing all of my work?  And what if I work with you and YOU are forced to put…

Tonya Wynn replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'Is free will really a supernatural concept?' in the group Free-Will DNE
Howard, I kinda agree with you, though you go into so much lenghty detail, I cringe.  Doesn't each species/organism CHOOSE a mate and isn't that called evolution?  And if each organism could only choose based on past/current…

Tonya Wynn replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'Is free will really a supernatural concept?' in the group Free-Will DNE
Freewil does exist in the Bible, or at least in my interpretation of it.  Temptation is kin to freewill.  Jesus was tempted by Satan on top of a hill, when Satan said you can have all of this IF you join with me.  Also, the…

Super fluid replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'NPR - synthetic DNA working in living cells - check it out...'
What Venter has done is somewhat interesting, technically, to biology nerds like myself, but it is of very little consequence. At least, it doesn't quite live up to the hype attributed to it by the news coverage. Best case scenario, this type…

Not a lot of love for the bioethics, eh? >What does this portend? I'll go devils advocate on this one. Bio terror and another weapons race. Military funding says offensive capability comes first, maybe a Bin Laden targeting virus?

Dylan Michael McFarland replied to Howard S. Dunn's discussion 'NPR - synthetic DNA working in living cells - check it out...'
What will happen? It's the exact same species that already exists. The only difference is the origin of the DNA. Nothing will happen.

Testicles in a soft sac on the OUTSIDE of the body - because there is no god. No ON/OFF spigot on them either - because there is no god. Religion - because there is no god.

About Me
I am a mystery and wonder loving atheist - I believe 'god' is, at best, a useless term but also do not believe that reality can be accurately parsed into disparate components or acurately mapped by any likely science in the next few thousand years. I also believe that 'nature' is a useless term since it encompasses everything - even the as yet unknown.

So much more to talk about ...

Posted on July 1, 2010 at 12:30pm 3 Comments

I was on the phone last night with an old friend I hadn't seen in fifteen years. He's an accomplished evolutionary biologist AND he owns a world-beat record label. While he is exposed to, via his business, belief systems from many diverse cultures, he has never believed in god; he was not raised that way. In fact, he admits that, while the notion has always been a curiosity, understanding the details of any given faith has not been much of a focus for him. That is not to say he is… Continue

Chemistry, Love and Purpose

Posted on June 6, 2010 at 10:00pm 6 Comments

It seems to me that for a huge number of people that once included myself, getting over religion wasn't really the hardest part of letting go of the idea of a spiritual realm.

I think the hardest part is the existential crisis presented by the notion that who we are and what we are boils down to electrochemical reactions. Love, meaning, purpose, identity, etc. aren't any more real or valid at the end of the day than lightning. There's a kind of profound reticence we feel…

I wonder about atheist messages in disguise ...

Posted on May 30, 2010 at 12:40am 13 Comments

When I was in the sixth grade, a nun called Sister Maxine (Sister Max) - who had to be a hippy lesbian in disguise - read Madeleine L'Engle's iconic book A Wrinkle in Time to us. I was totally blown away by that book. At the time I was sure she thought it was a secret take on Christianity. Nevertheless, it inspired me to go to the library and look for more ... science fiction.

I picked up a piece of preteen pulp by a guy named Robert Heinlein. It was about a kid who…

Don't make any sudden moves - you don't want to anger them

I've noticed an interesting trend in the rhetoric about, well, rhetoric - as it relates to speaking up and speaking out.

I was in a band years ago - an acid jazz band (for wont of a better term) and we were in the 'green room' at the club we were playing when I noticed they were pumping in really awful eighties disco. One of the singers, Yva, was this Peruvian pixie dyke with a full on beotch attitude and the voice of a goddess. In the room was a leather clad gay kid - a…

I don't live in Fresno; I live in Albany, NY. I read about the Fresno article as it was posted by someone else who attends FCC and I was interested in finding out more about that douche Brad Lopez. It turns out I was reading everything a few days after it was posted so I found some updates and decided to share them. I'm sure those musicians you mentioned are worthy of mentioning, though. If I am ever out in Fresno (and I do plan a Cali trip in the near future) I will keep an eye out!
