Triad Pride 2010

Posted on June 8, 2010 at 12:17pm 9 Comments

Well we did it! Despite seemingly

homophobic issues from a few members of our group, diminishing funds and

last minute issues, the Greensboro Atheist Organization got a booth at

the LGBT pride festival here in Greensboro, NC. Yay! Our first outreach

booth- and it was a whopping success. It drew more participants from the

group than almost any other meeting and got people excited as well as

getting several new members that same day on our meetup group. Just as… Continue

My atheist group is in need

Posted on May 18, 2010 at 11:26am 0 Comments

Hi everyone from Atheist Nexus! About half of the members of my group, the Greensboro Atheist Organization, seem to express an interest in

the activism side of the group. While non religious people make up

about 15% of the population and growing we still face huge equal rights

issues. I'm happy to say that we're working on some things for these

people in addition to our normal social activities, but we can't do it

without your help. The Greensboro Atheist Organization… Continue

Atheists: when disbelief does not equal logic or critical thinking.

Posted on May 7, 2010 at 10:41am 70 Comments

I've joined atheist forums all over the internet and even started my own local group of free thinkers to get together and have conversations that include logic and critical thinking, but I've started to notice something. A phenomenon that burst my smug little atheist bubble. There are so many articles and book and studies that say atheists are smarter, more logical, more open minded... I've come to understand that this statement is false. That's right.. I said it. Being an atheist does not… Continue

I never dreamed I'd make a difference

Posted on March 12, 2010 at 8:19pm 1 Comment

When I started the Greensboro Atheist Meetup I was, I'll admit, a little manic. I had the energetic urge to get out into the world, make a difference, and bring people together. I thought we'd get maybe a half a dozen members and make a couple of new atheist friends. Just a few people who's company we could be comfortable in.

That was a little over a year ago: February of 2009. Today the meetup group has over 125 members, a twitter account, a facebook fan page and group page and we're… Continue

Greetings, Heather! I notice you haven't been active at Atheist Nexus since April. <sigh> Sometimes it can seem a bit fragmented, with different groups for every interest. Please consider a group for socializing, where we talk about whatever's on our minds, Hang With Friends. :D You might feel more at home.

Hi Heather!

I saw your recent post on NC Atheists and had no helpful advice, but wanted to mention that one of my friends on facebook posted your group's billboard today! I'm glad I now have a face behind it. Also congrats on the booth at the pride fest, I hope some of my LGBT friends from UNCG saw it.

Hi,

The Vegetarian/Vegan group is going through a change. The creator has not been active on the site since 2008. Myself and another member are taking over soon. We would love for you to join us there.

Cheers,
sacha

G'day Heather,

Do they look like this:

http://www.bushcrafts.com.au/Aboriginal_Artifacts_and_Paintings.html#clapsticks

Cause they look pretty cool :) Many parts of Australia have very few indigenous people (aborigines), and most of the stuff the tourists see is probably atypical, though my parents do get kangaroos (practically) in their backyard (their property adjoins a nature reserve) :D

Regarding the $$, I'm guessing you think it's funny how colorful it is - I have heard from other Americans who compare Euros and AUD to Monopoly Money since they're used to plain ol' greenbacks :)

Next time you go on a trip to somewhere new, why don't you ask around the Nexus to see if you can get some freethinking locals to show you around? I know I'm going to do that when I get around to travelling - might even be able to cut costs a lot that way (tourists often get ripped off lol) :P

Seeya!
