Has anyone read "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali?

If you haven't read this book yet, I highly recommend it (there's a foreword by Christopher Hitchens). Essentially, the book is an autobiography on the life of a Somalian born Muslim woman who after…Continue

IS INDOCTRINATION CHILD ABUSE?

Started this discussion. Last reply by David Curry Apr 2, 2010. 35 Replies

If you ask Dawkins, Hitchens and others, childhood indoctrination in any religion is a form of child abuse. By pushing a religious ideology on a child, while their brains are rapidly developing, you…Continue

The title may be a little of an attention grabber....not sure it’s possible to directly convert a believer. BUT...I have made some really interesting headway with my wife (a solid christian who…Continue

That's a little confusing....you have the Atheist "A" as your avatar, on the Atheist Nexus forum...yet you are happy about your religous indoctrination and doubt you'll ever be an atheist?

Then I doubt you'll ever understand the true horrors of indoctrination. ^_^

If you become an atheist and still feel that way, I'll be amazed.

Child abuse is a little extreme but forcing your beliefs on you child is a very negative thing one of my earliest memorys regarding religion is of me balling my eyes out because i was terrified i was going to burn in hell for eternity because i…

Yes I did...Before I got to read her book,I saw her do a talk on C Span...She was astounding. I was glued to my seat. I also had trouble putting her book down. It was a real page turner.

One of my favorite books. There are some people who have the assumption that if you have something negative to say about Islam, you must not know anything about it (to know Islam is to love it??) or you don't "understand" it…

Has anyone read "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali?

If you haven't read this book yet, I highly recommend it (there's a foreword by Christopher Hitchens). Essentially, the book is an autobiography on the life of a Somalian born Muslim woman who after years of abuse and submission to her family and religion, ran away to Holland to seek refugee status (escaping an arranged marriage) and eventually became an atheist. It gives poignant insight into the Muslim world in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Ethiopia etc. a world that I know nothing about. For…See More

If your family is more fundie than progressive, in that they do beleive in a literal 6 day creation (early earth), Noah's flood, and that evolution is not real then I would suggest a book by Gordon Glover called Beyond the Firmament. OR...check…

Turek has a debate on youtube with Hitchens where Turek essentially runs through his points from his book(and yes, it is the same old tired stuff). I thought Hitchens handled it pretty well and really pissed Turek off. You could see how frusterated…

Skeptic replied to asking advice's discussion 'Am I a Deist?'
Yep...that’s deism. I can’t even begin to understand your position. When contemplating the possibility of a deistic god, I have to admit to myself that one certainly could exist. But with a non-personal god, who doesn't expect you…

Tom Thompson replied to Skeptic's discussion 'IS INDOCTRINATION CHILD ABUSE?'
"Fighting delusion with oppression never works as we see over and over in various mental institutions." That is an important point to make, I think. I cringe when I hear calls for government intervention to enforce "what we…

Sigmund replied to Skeptic's discussion 'IS INDOCTRINATION CHILD ABUSE?'
Well, yes, but doesn't it go a bit further than that? If you repeatedly tell a child something untrue, that will hinder their view of reality and ability to think clearly (because they have to wade through all the false assumptions first) and…

Then you should study genetics. It doesn't play "fair", or "equal", or whatever other term for trying to making every human equal/social label/conformist idiocy. No one actually is "equal". Anti-competitive…

Welcome to this great site and its thousands of bright people like you who recognise religion for the superstition and giant fraud that it is,
and that God and gods are merely fictions filling up valuable space inside unlucky people's brains.

Welcome... this is a great site for socializing and network with other nonbelievers. This site is growing, just like our cause.

Feel free to throw questions to me or reach out to me for anything. I am looking to network with other Atheists and spread proper critical thinking to others and grow our non-believing groups.
