"I think we should all nominate our own choice for the next Dalai Lama. No reason we should rely on the government for that service. I'm trying to come up with someone having as good a disposition as the current Mr. Lama. My dog does but…"
I've mentioned before that my family (wife, two kids, dog, bunny) say Thank Yous before meals. This is the compromise my wife and I came to. I couldn't stomach a long drawn out, religious prayer and she wanted something reflecting…"
"Naahhh...been done a million times before.
But if we can get Robert Downey Jr., DeCaprio, Clooney or Pitt?? Actually, it's more likely the studios would put either Cruise or Cage in the lead. That would really be weird."
""Actually, he didn't consider himself an atheist, the most he'd commit to was agnosticism,"
Yup, there's that integrity thing cropping up again. ;-)
I really wish more people would admit, just as you pointed out, that anyone…"
"I may have done a poor job of getting across my thoughts. At this point I'm not accusing either the organization or individual members of being racist. I really haven't done enough reading to know.
I am a little worried about any…"
"This should be a self correcting non-political system. When I read your post, I imaged the anarchist voting off the least anarchic (is that even a word?) of the group until only one was left. Rinse and repeat."
"I don't want to be pessimistic about this because I think it's a good thing the businesses are NOT torched.
I'm not sure how this actually works though as the only way I can see them helping is to call the police when something…"
"I fully expect many more people to be killed. We'll wring our hands over it, hem and haw over the 2nd amendment and blame it all on liberal/multicultural politics. In the meantime the bodies will stack up like cord wood.
Unfortunately, that 2nd…"
"Guns are legal (with some minor restrictions) and ridiculously plentiful in this country.
Police officers are all too often killed with those ridiculously plentiful guns in this country.
As a result, police officers approach each contact wary…"
"I didn't get the impression he literally believed Brown to be demon. He was just trying to ehem..."demonize" Brown to give people a reason to believe he felt threatened. That there was an unexplained struggle in the police car,…"
"Chopra is not a physicist. His using quantum mechanics as an explanation is nothing more than modern trendy "god in the gaps" logic. He is a quantum mysticist.
It's too bad he and I aren't young any more. I'd love to watch,…"
"It's funny this should be brought up, especially in a song mocking atheists. One of the major reasons I started down the path of atheism had to do with this song (the original). Even at a young age, I had the creepy feeling I was being…"
"Unfortunately, whether or not we go extinct has no bearing in the mind of a theist. The possibility will just be rationalized as "part of gods plan". After all, who are we to question the great and powerful Oz...I mean god.
I think this…"
Appreciate your comment (with a chuckle). Few people grasp the magical 50% threshold, or any other percentage for that matter. If one person in 300 survived a mining collapse, for example, it would be a "miracle" from god (and "thank god" uttered). Bad luck for the other 299. Crazy.
To try to encompass all of Robert Heinlein's philosophy by recommending one book is likely impossible. I COULD be tempted to suggest Time Enough For Love, even though it (sort of) requires that you read Methuselah's Children first (it really CAN stand on its own, though). There is a lot of RAH's philosophy in Time Enough and in many of his other books.
If you want to have a hard, strong look at his attitude on religion, I have three suggestions:
• Job: A Comedy of Justice. This REALLY gets to the heart of the matter ... and it should have been his FIFTH Hugo Award winner. • Stranger In a Strange Land. All you have to do is look at the gross parody which is Fosters "Church of the New Revelation" to see what he thinks of current-day organized religion. • If this goes on... from the collection, Revolt in 2100. One of the first pieces Heinlein wrote which dealt directly with religion and its leanings toward imperialism.
These are among my faves. We can talk about this if you like or you can go your own way. In any case, I'd be interested in hearing your reaction to whatever you do get into.
