George replied to Geraldo Cienmarcos's discussion 'How should Western intellectuals respond to Muslim scholars?' in the group Humanists
Saying that Muslims should convert to Christianity is a pretty strange solution.  Islam itself needs to be reformed, because the religion isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

About Me
I was raised by Calvinist - Baptist parents. I abandoned the faith completely around the age of 16 much to the dismay of my fundamentalist parents. I do like the Unitarians and Humanist Friends (Quakers) as an alternative to the evangelicals and of course because of their concerns for peace and reconciliation. I can enjoy their fellowship. However, for the most part I have something of psychic allergy for church services in general. I've also attended the Ethical Culture Society. I'm philosophically comfortable with pantheists or deists but I don't personally identify with that spiritual orientation.

The first political party I ever registered for was The Peace and Freedom Party (USA) at age 18. I'm currently a member of two Democratic Party Clubs and I like the Green Party and progressive Democrat party platforms. If I were in Western Europe I would probably be in the Green or Social Democrat party.

I am a long time subscriber of American Humanist Association. I'm also a member of Center for Inquiry.

Over the decades I've been politically active in the LGBT community, the Society of Friends, American Friends Service Committee, and efforts to end US Military Intervention in Central America and I was involved in the Sanctuary Movement for the care and aid of war and political refugees from El Salvador and opposition to the anti-democratic violent intervention by the USA.

For leisure reading I enjoy cultural history and philosophy. Sometimes I get out in the sunlight (just kidding).

One of my lifelong passions is classical (and modern art music) from Bach through Stravinsky and before and beyond. There aren't many people in the peace movement or political left of center to share that with. And some on the left, mistakenly!, frown on it as elitist. I would welcome hearing from similar minded people.

I support Single Payer Universal Health Care.

And I'm a news junkie. Favorite web news sites: www.alternet.org and www.truthout.org . I identify with Secular Humanism and the cause of social and economic justice and naturalistic rational reasoning. There is no heaven, so we need to live ethical lives here on earth.

Thanks for the post on the potential gay bar next to the mosque. Something about that idea makes me smile really hard on the inside. If it happens, I will be making a trip to New York.

Am a member of the gay group and the ham radio group now. Unfortunately, there are no gay ham radio groups on here, so I am still not fitting in completely.

Hello Geraldo, and welcome to this friendly meeting place with freethinkers including humanists who recognise that religion is a great fraud aimed at controlling vulnerable superstitious people, including especially defenceless children; and
how tragic and inexcusable it is that women and minorities have been oppressed these last two thousand years and even longer.

Terry Meaden (academic; retired; 60+; classical music lover)
founder of the busy group "ORIGINS: Universe, Life, Earth, Humans, Religion, Evolution, Darwin..." with its 280 discussion topics.
We invite you to join us and 1635 others.
