Buz the Bear replied to George Ricker's discussion In the news in the group Florida Atheists
"Advertising is pricey and many churches have an endless supply of cash to entice/con others into joining them. One of the problems I have with organized religion is that the members of most churches proselytise and actively seek members. I guess no…"

In the news

Atheists and atheism are getting more positive news coverage these days. We have a long way to go, but this seems to me to be a good sign. The Miami HeraldBeyond belief: Atheists push for greater visibility and acceptanceThere's nothing unusual about churches advertising Sunday services, but South Florida atheists are turning that idea on its head: Why not promote the belief that there is no God?See More

Jim DePaulo replied to George Ricker's discussion Irreconcilable differences in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Well said. Science has nothing to gain from accommodating the irrational and much to lose if it does so. In the words of H. L. Mencken "For centuries, theologians have been explaining the unknowable in terms of the-not-worth-knowing.""

Steve replied to George Ricker's discussion Irreconcilable differences in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
"Terrific essay; The very notion that we must be careful not to offend the moderate religious because they have been so nice as to accept some scientific concepts seem to me to be asking their permission to pursue the craft. How great was it when the…"

Tom Lundy replied to George Ricker's discussion Freethought Day at Disney in the group Florida Atheists
"I’d be interested if you were going to EPCOT but not the Magic Kingdom. You can't even get a beer in the Magic Kingdom. It's defiantly for kids."

Freethought Day at Disney

The Space Coast Freethought Association will sponsor its annual Freethought Day at Disney on October 17th (that's a Saturday) at Disney World. There is a Freethought Day at Disney web site, which contains particulars and will include plans as they develop for this year's event. This is simply a get-together to have fun with some like-minded people and to get to know other freethinkers from around the state. It's a fairly…See More

George Ricker replied to Brad Feaker's discussion An atheist manifesto - of sorts... in the group ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN
""Atheism is the absence of god-belief. All else is embellishment." I wrote that in the introduction to my book, mere atheism: no gods...no problem! Frankly, I don't like the idea of anything called an "atheist manifesto"…"

George Ricker updated their profile
Jul 11, 2009
I have just updated the Godless in America website with the following. In the blog, I note a discount on my books, mention the mobbing of a reporter in Jerusalem, cite a ruling against a Bible Club, talk about some scientists who "just say no" to the Templeton Foundation, plug le Tour de France, offer an invite to the upcoming Freethought Day at Disney (sponsored by the SCFA), and provide links to a couple of videos that I find inspiring. I have also added links to a couple of humorous sites (there's a new section called "Humor" on the "Links" page) and a science blog by Jerry Coyne called "Why Evolution Is True," named after his excellent book with the same title. I have added a new essay called "Irreconcilable differences: the myth of compatibility between science and religions."

"Nothing about atheism prevents me from thinking about any idea. It is the very epitome of freethought. Atheism imposes no dogma and seeks no power over others." mere atheism: no gods…no problem!

I didn't know you George, but I just gave the world, on your behalf, a moment of pandemonium -- right outside front my house -- I wonder if the neighbors now think I'm off my nut? (But it felt really good!)
