God has trouble with infinity

God is usually referred to in infinite terms. God is all-powerful, which can be interpreted as infinately powerful as no matter how much power he has you could always just postulate a little more.…Continue

Objective morality

Started this discussion. Last reply by Jim DePaulo Aug 1, 2010. 7 Replies

I am sure that any atheist who has even skirted the theism/atheism debate has encountered what I will term here the “objective morality” argument. The argument has a couple of versions but the common…Continue

Annoying question!

Started this discussion. Last reply by The Nerd Jul 10, 2010. 1 Reply

Theists and Atheists both pose the following question quite regularly; surprisingly regularly it seems to me. They ask “Why is there something rather than nothing?” “Why are there rules or laws which…Continue

ORIGINS: UNIVERSE, LIFE, HUMANKIND, AND DARWIN

We debate origins of the Universe, life, Earth, humans, religion, atheism, using common sense, evolution, cosmology, geology, archaeology, and other sciences, to repel biblical creationism and other religious beliefs.

One less stupid idea

Posted on August 12, 2010 at 8:00am 11 Comments

There is a view that is widely held in the atheist community that atheists are critical thinkers, freethinkers, scientifically minded, sensible people who are both liberated from taboo and practical, down-to-earth pragmatists.

This is complete and utter horseshit. It can be true. In my experience though, many atheists are just

people with one less stupid idea than theists. I admit that when I came…

Everywhere I have seen people talk about atheism there are stories about how they deconverted. I find myself a little envious of these stories. Most of them talk about how liberating and freeing it was to take off the religous shakles. It actually sounds like a pretty good experience (at the end anyway).

I have never believed (as far back as I can remember) anyway. I remeber being in church making my communion in primary school. I knelt in prayer like everyone else and remember… Continue

Yeah, I know ... and you can't tell the players without a program, either!

Wanted to say I appreciated your comment on my post about Eratostenes. He and others like him were likely THE FIRST to use objective means to gain knowledge. Problem was, instead of the RC church on their case, they had the Romans! [sigh] and so it goes.

I quite agree with many of your comments:

"I wonder what you consider mysoginy. Sometimes it seems to me that when you point to a difference between men and women, people think it is sexism. The funny thing is, when you point to a difference that is derogatory of men, everyone (male and female) is ok with it...
While I do not agree at all with unequal treatment of anyone for any reason, I do also believe that part of being treated like an adult and an equal is that you are capable of taking a little bit of shit from douchebags from time to time...
Also, on an aside, I think when you moderate comments you are all-but automatically closing down the possibility of really finding out what people think. It is a position I just can't bring myself to respect. I don't mean any insult to you personally, just presenting my position on it. "

I was hoping this discussion would get more traffic. There are two separate but extremely important aspects to the discussion which I feel should not be marginalized. One is comment moderation (you can read what I have to say about that here) and the other is posting a discussion about misogyny in the atheist community. Let me make it clear that I am referring to posting a discussion about perceived misogyny perpetuated by men in the atheist community, not misogyny itself. I don't think many people see how insidious and damaging both of those things are. I will be posting more there soon. I would be pleased if you were willing to join the conversation.

Cheers,
sacha

how tragic and inexcusable it is that women and minorities have been oppressed these last two thousand years and even longer.
