The Death of Expertise

An article was posted on another site I frequent, where I'm the only vocal atheist on that site. In reading it, I couldn't help but think about organized religion, and how many people claim to be religious, even though their occupation involves many…Continue

About DPL ... don't worry if that sounds foreign, it's an acronym I made up

Started this discussion. Last reply by booklover Mar 28, 2013. 4 Replies

I think it is important to consider that religiosity, similar to human sexuality, is a function of two variables – genetics and religious environment. I have a theory regarding a human genetic “potential” for accepting the god concept, which in turn…Continue

Future replied to Deidre's discussion Dogmatic atheism?
"Like Loren, I'm kind of scratching my head as to what atheists have to argue about. Though most of us are fairly liberal, the occasional conservative does speak up, and aggressive debate often follows. But those differences are unrelated to no…"
Future commented on Jonathan Tweet's blog post Land of Nice Atheists
"So, what about the actual theists in Denmark? Don't they get offended by everyone pretending to believe? Why have a deistic religion at all? Seems like a prime place for a pantheistic religion to thrive, where they could make rituals to fill…"
Future commented on Joan Denoo's blog post The list of authors denouncing the myth of Jesus Christ continues to grow
"One fatally overlooked flaw in the whole Jesus thing, is that Jesus wasn't such an exceptional criminal in the eyes of his Roman contemporaries as to merit burial in a tomb. He was just another guy strung up on a cross, and his remains would…"

Future commented on Joan Denoo's blog post The list of authors denouncing the myth of Jesus Christ continues to grow
"There were probably a thousand people named Jesus at that time, so Jesus existed. Who gives a crap. The Jesus that walked on water, multiplied food, healed the sick, etc. - that guy is a total farce."

Future replied to Sky God's discussion Atheist purpose for living without God
"Why do I need to have a purpose? I didn't ask to be here, I just am, like everyone else. I'm going to make the best of it, and common sense says that we all will do better if we all respect one another."

Future replied to James M. Martin's discussion Ben Affleck Debates Maher and Harris and Makes Total Ass of Himself

Future replied to matthew greenberg's discussion Scalia - atheists are second class citizens
"Some people eat pasta with meatballs with religious-like zeal, some people eat wafers and wine and pretend it's a 2,000 year old dead guy. Which one sounds crazier?"

Future replied to matthew greenberg's discussion Scalia - atheists are second class citizens
"What an idiot. All the atheist has to do to defeat this line of (il)logic is to put a spaghetti strainer on their head and presto - we are back to first class citizenship."

I doubt if I ever reread Anna, but I might try War and Peace again, although after reading the bio of Tolstoy, I'm thinking not. Both are rather tedious and could using considerable editing!

I've used Craigslist, but don't feel comfortable with it for some reason. Guess I like to actually see and touch something before buying it. I even tried to sell my truck on CL. (No takers--I live out in the boondocks.)

Regarding your comment left on my "newspaper demise" post: despite early failed attempts to get the local news off the internet, for some reason, I now  have full access. Perusing the headlines, my original suspicions are confirmed--the printed version is a waste of paper and money (mine). Free is good!

As to "Alonzo Archimedes Future," I refer you to Gregory Peck's opus, Capt. Newman, MD, which featured Eddie Albert as the above-mentioned Mr. Future, though Albert's character was more conventionally known as Army Col. Norval Algate Bliss.

An odd flick here and there, but worth your time.

Your comments on my post are much appreciated. I've decided I'm not going to jump into the deep end of philosophical analysis of  the subject(s). "Shallow Hal" is my mantra!
