My father died on July 4th 2001 in my home as did my mother in law 1 year earlier. Both spent their final days surrounded by sons and daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends they had known for years. It was an unique situation and…

Thanks AAF and David. One lesson learned from this experience is the importance of pre-planning ones own funeral. My mother had planned and pre-paid hers years ago and, as a result, her wishes were known, the expenses were 100% covered, and the…

My deepest condolences Father Nature. David mention that your mother passed away with the most possible dignity. From your story, the dignity you, your sister, and that caring physician, provided your mother speaks volumes. More so than any…

My sympathies to you Father Nature. I am sorry that your grieving could not take place without the childish nonsense of religion. Most of my family is religious as well, and my brother is a priest, so I expect that I will go through this type of…

Thanks for sharing. I was moved. Your mother passed away with the most possible dignity in the circumstances, and that is something to be grateful for. I was impressed with your discretion during the funeral - that's how it should be. Take…

Thank you and best wishes to you and your grandpa. I agree that hospice (or palliative) care is a much more humane approach. The doctors and nurses were wonderful. The "commercial for Jesus" aspect was somewhat offset by our display of…

Sorry for your loss. I am also seeing a relative in what they call "decline". My grandpa is 92 and has always loved walking and hiking and was very intellectual. In the past few months he's slowly lost the ability to walk, has…

I went to church today

We buried my mother today. She had turned 100 last month so obviously we knew that her time was limited. A week before she died, she fell in her room at the nursing home and broke her leg. She had been confined to a wheelchair for years and, we assume, tried to get up unassisted. She was never a very patient person. Although she was conscious after the fall and complaining of pain, by the time she got to the hospital, she had lost consciousness. She would never wake up again. She spent the next…See More

Howl at the moon

Are you tired of Christmas, the winter celebration hijacked by the cult of the zombie Jezuz? Of course you are but the real reason for the season, the winter solstice, occurs on Sunday, Dec 21 at 12:04 UTC (7:04am ET).

If you're looking for an alternate way to celebrate the "rebirth of the sun", here (from wikipedia) is a sampling of other winter customs.

Scientific American Special Issue On Evolution - UPDATED

Posted on December 15, 2008 at 2:00pm 2 Comments

Of interest to many of you, the latest issue of Scientific American is devoted to the subject of Darwin's theory of evolution. You can read the articles here.

Of particular interest is an article entitled 'The Latest Face of Creationism' that describes how creationists hide their true aims under ever changing guises. The legal battles over the teaching of creationism will probably never stop so people of reason need to be ever vigilant to… Continue

I AM THE TURKEY GOD. WORSHIP ME.

Posted on November 27, 2008 at 9:00pm 5 Comments

(Part 1)

Like millions of Americans, I spent Thanksgiving with relatives. We sacrificed a turkey and took Holy Communion of its’ body and its’ blood with stuffing, mashed potatoes, football on TV....the works. And like many of you, I was the lone liberal atheist among a family of right-wing evangelical Jezuz worshipers. Now, these are actually good people in many ways. Decent, hard working, family-oriented, even funny sometimes. But, sadly, they have a mental disorder, Christian… Continue

I Recommend This Documentary Video Site

Posted on November 25, 2008 at 5:06pm 1 Comment

Just wanted to share this with the A/N community.

I came across a very good web site that hosts various documentary videos including, on the linked page, A War On Science, The God Who Wasn't There, The Enemies of Reason, etc.

I hope this link isn't already posted somewhere here. I had never seen it before.

Very interesting article. Makes me look at people (and myself) in a little differently. I guess, too, (and I think you suggested this already) it shows why religion is still so strong. “Our modern skulls house a Stone Age mind,” as Cosmides and Tooby state. There has not been much need to change.

That's OK Arnab. Much quicker than the second coming of Christ. Wouldn't want to be hanging by the balls waiting for that to happen.
