A Story about Albert Camus: In response to "Accomodationism just muddy [sic] the waters"

Posted on May 15, 2011 at 5:07pm 2 Comments

Note: I am writing a devil's advocate position in defense of positions that do not hold the party line.

During the 50s, Albert Camus, my favorite philosopher, lost many of his friends because of his silence on the Algerian war, his movement for 'civil truce' and his criticism of communism.

Camus felt that if he himself became outspoken like his former friends Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beavoir that tensions in Algeria might increase and thus further endanger the lives… Continue

On the Possibility of God's existence and reflections on Christian Narratives

Rather than making up numbers and having a debate over Pascal's wager, I just say that something should not even be put on the table as possible if there is no evidence of its possibility.

This is a arguable but important methodical principle, in my honest opinion.Being wrong is not inconsistent with induction to the best explanation. The nice thing about science is that even if the theories and methods are improved, the main principle is that it is based of the conditions of… Continue

Oh hey there Eric! I'm also from Texas. I'm going to check out your poems on Deviant Art. I noticed you were talking about them in chat.

Anyways, have a nice day!

Hey Eric,

There are many possible things you can do with this email of which I am very much unable to predict exactly which one you will choose. My hope is that read on.

I am relatively sure that you follow Dan Dennet's progress far better than I follow Sam Harris' progress.

By "coincidence", I was made aware of an article by Sam Harris today with the title: Free Will and "Free Will": How my view differs from Daniel Dennett's

I started to read through it and I was struck by the similarity of our discussion yesterday.

I would hope that you read at least the parts about color in the beginning of the article (if not the whole article).

I wonder if you will notice how much nicer Sam puts it than I do, but basically he is saying that Dan is playing word games.

I quote a little bit of Sam's article here to make a point:

"In Free Will, I argue that people are mistaken in believing that they are free in the usual sense. I claim that this realization has consequences—good ones, for the most part—and for that reason we should not gloss over it by revising our definition of “free will” too quickly."

I quote those sentences to show that if you do not understand them, but you want to, then you might be more inclinded to read the whole thing.

You can share this email with anyone you like except the Devil. Oh no! I am God and the Devil, so if you share it with God, you will also share it with the Devil! Word games, they are so frustrating.

Oh! Can't forget the link to the webpage containing Sam's article: http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/free-will-and-free-will
