Hi Elizabeth,
I know how hard it is growing up in a RED state. Missouri (especially where I live) is very red.
I became a non-believer three years ago. Living in the middle of the bible belt can be very difficult at times. I think it would take a miracle to get these people to see outside the box. It took me a long time. I am over 65 now and feel like I have waisted most of my life in a "fantasy world" believing in something that does not exist.
Hang in there and write back anytime....

Well, at least you can hang out with the Buddhists. There probably aren't many over there, though. Still, there should be a temple in Houston, right?

What does 'currently' mean? Are we transitioning through Buddhism on our way to something else?

Ah, that'll do it, yeah. Heck, I view Buddhism more as a philosophy than a religion, anyway, unless you include the reincarnation and a few of the other bits. Some Buddhists don't even believe in that, apparently.

Thanks for the kind words, Elizabeth. Speaking out for change and helping people is why all of us started with podcasting and blogging and the other projects we work on. It's always really nice to hear that we've done some good for someone. You seem pretty sharp, though. I have no doubt you'd have been OK one way or another. You seem to have a pretty kick-ass mom, too.

If you like Buddhism, you might want to check out some of Sam Harris' talks in which he mentions naturalistic explanations for transcendent experiences. Granted, it wasn't a terribly popular sentiment among his fellow atheists, but he maintains that what are called "higher states of consciousness," "transformative experiences" or "transcendent experiences" can be real even if they are not supernatural in nature and that they can be attained through meditation, among other things. Here is one article he wrote on the subject:

It's good to know that I can count on you between now and when the dark lord of madness crawls forth from his watery grave.

Peace out!

Ah, gotcha. So, you've got no deities of any sort, but you've still got some of the background residual stuff left over from religion. No worries. I know several Buddhists. Far more decent people and much less hypocritical than your average Christian. Heck, we've got a few highly held ones, like moJoe mentioned.

Weeeeellll, some sects of Buddhism can get a bit intense when they're in power, too. Buddhism just doesn't have a real theocratic home, right now, ever since China went Communist and soaked up Tibet. Historically, Buddhism has had it's psycho fundamentalists, too.

Oh, and yeah, I've heard of the Austin bat cruises on The Atheist Experience, many times. That would be cool to check out, sometime when I can make it down that way.

True enough. All of the psycho stuff I've heard about Buddhists is well in the past, by at least a couple of centuries.

And yeah, I'm seriously taking a look at Austin. The growing, nationwide recognition of the ACA is yet another reason. I've heard about the 'special souvenirs' on the bat cruise, too. :-D

Heh. Eww eww eww eww eww. Have I mentioned that I'm obsessive-compulsive? Not high on my list of fun experiences. They'd better have a hose nearby afterward.

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 5 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

anti-atheist rant from an Orthodox Mormon part 2

What do you think of this,

Nathan Young,

No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it.  The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs.  I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance.  The letter was a mockery of atheism.  Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
