"Wake Forest University recently published a short, objective Q&A primer on the current law of separation of church and state--as applied by the courts rather than as caricatured in the blogosphere. I commend it to you. http://tiny.cc/6nnnx"

David Ivester replied to David Ivester's discussion Why our government calls upon us to pledge allegiance to the republic "under God"
"Greywolf, I agree we need politicians to stick their necks out more often. They should, at the very least, stand up for the principles of equality and separation of church and state. Beyond that, they should publicly treat atheism with the same…"

"It's time more politicians show some bark on their hides and do stick their neck out more often! I live in northeast Wisconsin and you wouldn't believe what the locals are getting away with in "punishing" this atheist for being…"

And More . . .

I'm told that I'm traditional and radical, stimulating and boring, active and lazy, responsible and not, kind and thoughtless, intellectual and practical, and all in all a nice guy--mostly. My grown daughter wrote a letter telling me that as she heard her friends describe what they like about her, she came to realize that what makes her interesting and unique to her friends are all the traits she learned from me. I think maybe she overstated my part in it, but I still beamed at the thought.

I enjoy the outdoors and the city, fatherhood, and the company of friends--and there's food, drink, conversation, concerts, theater, projects, politics, music, writing, reading, solitude, soft touches, and lots more--even shopping.

I love being a father, though I gave it little thought until my first daughter was born, and then I was hooked for good. I have three children--daughters, 28 and 11, and a son, 24. The twenty-somethings have left the nest, and my youngest lives with me every other weekend and now and then. The rest of the time I have the pleasure and freedom of living alone.

I practice land use and environmental law, which is expert-intensive, so I get to indulge my interests in science and nature by learning at the elbows of great teachers. I also enjoy serving on the boards of a couple of non-profits.

Doug, please consider joining my new group HERCULANEUM: A PLACE FOR MEN. Herculaneum is a group where men can discuss and explore the ideas, goals, demands, ethics, sexuality, and nature of manhood and masculinity. It is a place where we are free to be ourselves, and discuss the issues most important to our identities as men.

I have already started two discussions to get us going: How do we define manhood in the 21st century? and Rites of Passage: A Lost Ritual?.

This is a private group, and discussions can be viewed by members only. Membership is open to men only. Please check it out.
