Happy new year. Happy, happy. I want to be a happy, healthy, hopeful atheist, but throughout the workweek, whenever the obligatory supernaturalism is projected onto incidents by the ignorant around me and I reply placidly that it might be better to go with a reasonable explanation of world events, often as not, I get this tiresome response: "I don't know HOW you can do that- how can you live without believing in something?" Today's Saturday, and I'm wondering, at random...whatever happened to Mr. Saturn? Nobody loves him, anymore. For centuries, millions of men, women and children prayed fervently to him, staked their hopes and dreams on him, and now- he's reduced to a gas giant planet and a gas giant car and a special day every week, a day without presents. No sacrifices, no blood, no nada.

Thanks for your comments on my blog post. We share some perspectives.
I'm not sure why - it made me recall when I lived in a college town in Indiana, 20 years ago. The police rounded up gay men by entrapping them, then published lists in the local newspaper - not even a trial. This led to ostracism, lost jobs, and untold personal losses. In separate situations, there were beatings by local thugs, and murder. I think that some of us have come a long way from that - in time, and for me, in miles. But there is always a place in the back of my mind that says, not as far as you think. The religious bigots want to move us back in that direction, but they don't want to admit it so they use Orwellian doublespeak to spin their pretty webs.
