Fortunately, shortly after moving to Jacksonville in 1999 (after getting out of the Navy), I found the First Coast Freethought Society, which had been founded just the year before. I'd initially moved here from San Jose back in 1990 and felt pretty isolated because it seemed everyone I knew -- family, co-workers, etc. -- were all very religious and mostly very conservative. Since returning here, I've made many non-theistic and more liberal friends, even if we are a minority in NE FL.

Hey! I definitely feel where you're coming from. Jacksonville is very different from what I'm accustomed to. I don't know if you're interested, but there's an atheist/agnostic meetup group that meets once a month to discuss things. I haven't made it out to a meetup yet but if you ever want to meet like-minded people here it seems like a good place to start. Just google Jacksonville meetups and you should be able to find it.
