PZ Myers: "David Silverman, a principled atheist"

Atheist blogger and biologist PZ Myers wrote this today, following an extended exchange between American Atheists President David Silverman and blogger Justin Vacula on Twitter:

Go to twitter now: David Silverman (@MrAtheistPants) is tearing the atheist trolls a new one. This is really what I like to see: a leader of a major atheist organization taking an unambiguous stand against this ulcer in our midst, and repudiating the spammy, photoshopping, lying behavior of the anti-feminist clique.

How much do I appreciate it? With my dollars. My wife is going to sign us up for a lifetime membership in American Atheists while I’m away. It’s not a casual investment, so not everyone can do that, but you could send them a donation to let the organization know that you like a leader with a spine.

The staff at American Atheists headquarters wants to take a moment, on behalf of our volunteers, Regional Directors, members, and atheists nationwide, to thank PZ and his wife, Mary, publicly for their support of our president and our organization, and for standing up for positive values in the broader atheism movement.

One of the things that attracted me to working for American Atheists is our overwhelming dedication to equality, including feminism, within the broader context of the atheism activism work that we do but also in general. American Atheists was the first major atheist organization to adopt a harrassment policy for conferences, and it's something we take very seriously. We care about all of our members and want everyone, atheist or not, activist or not, to feel comfortable at all times.

We are very proud to welcome PZ and Mary as Life Members. Although American Atheists' mission is fighting discrimination against atheists, advocating for atheist civil rights, and addressing issues of First Amendment public policy, we care very much about feminism & social justice in the atheist activism movement and how these issues relate to and involve individuals involved in our collective efforts.

Representative opens House session with Carl Sagan quotation; Ed Buckner in the news about Georgia state parks

Democratic Representative Juan Mendez of Tempe, AZ opens House session with Carl Sagan quotation

We are very proud of Arizona today! Instead of the "usual" prayer, when it was Mendez's turn to perform the invocation, he instead quoted Carl Sagan. Progress! We thank Mendez for his willingness to be open about his admiration for one of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century—who also happens to be an atheist—and we hope this sets off a nationwide trend.

Our former President Ed Buckner is once again in the news about our book donations to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources:

Atheists to Accept Georgia Governor’s Offer by Sending Atheist Books to State Parks

Atheists to Accept Georgia Governor’s Offer by Sending Atheist Books to State Parks
Materials Will Be Placed Alongside Bibles in Cabins

Cranford, NJ—American Atheists announced Friday that it will send the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR) enough popular atheist books to place one in every state park cabin in the state. The atheist books will be placed alongside Gideon Bibles already in every state park cabin as directed by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal on Wednesday.

“We appreciate the governor’s invitation to place atheist books in the cabins and look forward to providing visitors with the opportunity to learn more about atheism when they visit Georgia’s beautiful state parks,” said Managing Director Amanda Knief.

The issue of the Bibles in the state park cabins came to light after former American Atheist President Ed Buckner rented one of the lodges last month and filed a complaint on April 28 after finding nine Bibles in his cabin.

The Bibles were removed by GADNR officials but Governor Deal ordered the Bibles back by executive order, saying he does “not believe that a Bible in a bedside table drawer constitutes a state establishment of religion.”

“American Atheists does not believe the State of Georgia should be placing Bibles or atheist books in state park cabins; however, if the state is going to allow such distribution, we will happily provide our materials,” said President David Silverman.

Books to be donated include  “Why I Am Not A Muslim,” by Ibn Warraq, “Why I Am An Atheist” by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, “god is not Great,” by Christopher Hitchens, and “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins.

American Atheists is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Cranford, New Jersey, that advocates for the complete separation of religion and government, defends the civil rights of atheists, and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy. Founded in 1963 by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, American Atheists celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Good you're taking your time; it's worth doing well. What strikes me is how atheists are ignored as far as being ordinary citizens goes (or demonised), yet if we open our mouths, we're suddenly under the magnifying glass, even by our own. When it becomes generally accepted that we're allowed to open our mouths, we might not have to open them as wide.

Mum's the word. If it does get done, please leave a link somewhere I can see it. I'm still chuckling at what Colbert did with the tides business. You too, probably (devil).

Good showing on O'Reilly. Not the first time I've seen someone throw "where?" at you when you mention all the billboards hostile to atheists. Maybe snapshots of them could be gathered together online somewhere, to make that "where?" a little more pointless (or has that already been done without me noticing?). Always a pleasure to see you at work.
