"Well, who wouldn't tell these jerks what they are wanting to hear? I give Obama credit for saying those words. I believe most intelligent politicians and powerful people in the public eye have to say this kind of crap to stay in power.…"
We debate origins of the Universe, life, Earth, humans, religion, atheism, using common sense, evolution, cosmology, geology, archaeology, and other sciences, to repel biblical creationism and other religious beliefs.
"I just love the fact that it seems like many more members are contributing than in days past. Personally, I love Dawkins, have read The God Delusion and loved it, and am starting on The Greatest Show On Earth. Because Dawkins is so brilliant and…"
"Aiden, the excerpt from The Trashing of Margaret Mead was fascinating. Since I've lived in Hawaii for many years, and the fact that my dad was employed by Dr. Mead made it doubly interesting. I added my two cents."
"Thanks, Daniel. I had no idea. My wife and I live in Hawaii where orchids require only an occasional rain shower to thrive. They are my wife's favorite flower, and are so popular here that the local museum has an annual orchid sale as a…"
I went to your links and understand more what Steampunk is. I grew up in a 100 year old house, and my Great-Aunt's house was even older. There were touches of Steampunk in both places. Same thing here about the precipitation. Our Mt. Waialeale is one of the rainiest spots on earth, averaging 544 inches of rain per year. But now, it's down to about 350 inches. Global warming, I suppose.
I have been an atheist since at least the fifth grade. I say that because I remember telling one of my classmates that I didn't believe in god at that time. Before that time, I absorbed some of the ideas about Christianity passively from television, adult conversations, and the few experiences I had with church.
Most of my family were atheists by default. They never spoke of god, openly made fun of fanatics, but just never said the words, "I don't believe." Religion played no conscious roll in our family llife, although the religiously "moral" impact could be felt. "Sex" was a dirty word, and women who dressed at all provocatively were "whores." Go figure.
I think that is mainly true Dave but "Cretin"ist schools are creeping into this country as well.. I think generally Britain is less religious and we don't have the level of fanaticism over here that there sems to be in parts of the US. We do have a growing Muslim population in this country though that are forming a fanatical wing.. and I am really, really not a fan of Islam at all..
