Dave replied to Ivan Reyes's discussion Human Rights and God go hand in hand according to Glenn Beck
"There would seem to be two main possibilities. One is that ‘human rights’ are somehow embedded in nature, and that they can be ‘discovered’ and explicated rather in the way that science discovers natural phenomena empirically…"

Dave replied to Leon's discussion Philosophic suggested reading?
"Just a couple of suggestions: Although you mentioned European philosophy, I notice you didn't refer specifically to French philosophers. I would think here of Jean-Paul Sartre (Being and Nothingness), the phenomenologist Paul Ricoeur, and…"

Dave replied to Ruth Dickson's discussion Free Will?
"The idea of free will is not simply an esoteric interest of philosophers but part and parcel of our self-concept as humans. Some of us might agree that we are intuitively convinced that we have it, but even if we deny that this is the case, we are…"

Dave replied to Mister Harvey's discussion An interesting test of "Free Will".
"The assumption that underlies your question sequence, Mike, seems to be that 'believing' is volitional, and as far as I can see, there is no epistemological basis for supposing that that this is possible. We hold propositions to be true or…"

Hello Dr Peter, thanks for your greeting. There are so many sites now inviting exploration of naturalistic views of reality. It’s good to see. You’re so right about the general and mindless self-exemption from thinking which these sites all do their best to address and counter as best they can. I’ve blogged on quite a few of them and try to tune in to what it is that they can do most successfully. Some unfortunately tend to be appropriated from time to time by atheist ‘attack-dogs’ who don’t really understand how irrational beliefs can be reinforced rather than weakened when under siege. I understand their frustration with those who help the world to run on fairytales, but the strategy is misguided. I’ve sometimes seen a tentative post by someone who is probably open to an alternative point of view ruthlessly attacked for its stupidity. Pity. I rate friendliness and inclusiveness as top options for a website wanting to promote naturalistic worldviews.

Cheers

G'day Dave,

Certainly it's a place that's miles away from the mindless fairy story dribble that haunts the minds of so many others.

Welcome to the Nexus.
