Jay, thanks for the great post. I enjoyed reading about your journey. Your path through Islam is quite extraordinary. But I guess that means you tested a wider set of options than 99.9% of religious people. Glad you found a way to disinfect yourself.

Hugh: Thanks for posting your article and the video. I will be putting another segment up in a couple of weeks. I was totally surprised at how many views the video got in the first 5 days - 3,000. That is by far more than any of my other videos got…

Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion.

It was great to watch the video, but I was a tad distressed to see the back of my head dominating the bottom of the screen!

I'm looking forward to watching the video. There was so much in your talk that I wanted to remember. I took some notes, but I know that there are some finer points that I missed so I'm excited to be able to go back and watch it again. You are right…

Raised in a fundamentalist home, took a MA in religion by age 24 then a Doctorate in psychology by 29. I was always interested in the psychology of religion. I stopped practicing all religion at 38 yrs. of age and figured out I was an atheist at about age 40. Just released my third book, The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture. Book Review

Bill Hamby just published at great book review in Secular News Daily. Take a look. http://www.secularnewsdaily.com/2010/09/01/review-the-god-virus/

I don't know Bill, but he has a easy writing style. I am very glad he mentions our group Recovering from Religion. Hopefully, it will lead to interest in starting new groups.

Major Turning Point!

Well that may be a little exaggeration but this week something happened that certainly adds (or ads) a new dimension to our secular battles. For the first time, a commercial enterprise is using a blasphemous theme in its marketing efforts. More importantly the marketing is targeted directly at those who are most susceptible to infection - children and adolescents! Take a look at this link:

Religion as a Sexually Transmitted Disease

Spoke at the Midwest Humanist Conference in Lincoln, NE on Sunday and gave my new presentation, Religion as a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Seemed to go over quite well. I just put a new clip from the presentation up on Youtube. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaHpHd5paGg

They had some great speakers including DJ Grothe, Greg Lammers, Dan Barker, but the surprise was Amanda Kneif whose presentation style and conte… Continue

Religion as a Sexually Transmitted Disease

Just back from Lincoln, NE where I gave the first talk on my new lecture, "Religion as a Sexually Transmitted Disease". Seemed to go over well and create a little controversy. I hope to give the talk in several places over the next year. I think sex is the weakest point in any of the major religions. Attacking religions at their weakest spot, undermines their effectiveness. If you or your group are interested in this talk, let me know.

A new podcast came out recently from Inside the Ath… Continue

Yes -- please let me know if you are coming to Houston in August. Even though I am not "out" in my community, I have joined some of the Houston Meet-Ups and heard that I missed you earlier this year. Thanks so much for your words of encouragement!

Hi Darrel and thanks for friending me. I am currently reading "The God Virus" and also purchased and gave a copy to a friend. We are both "underground" in our community but her husband is also an atheist whereas mine is Christian (I'm the one who changed, not him). I'm looking forward to the discussions on Atheist Nexus and in the Recovering from Religion group!

Hi Darrel,
Thanks for accepting my friend request. No, I have not read The God Virus yet but are familiar with you. I attended AAI in Burbank last October and American Atheists in Newark. But your book has been recommended to me by a good friend Noelle George of the Secular Center and I plan to pick it up this week. Nice to meet you!

Thanks for adding me. If you have a book tour that brings you to Georgia I'd definitely be interested in picking up a copy and meeting you.

Your book is helping me understand why I am going through what I'm going through right now. I just finished reading about the hypnosis techniques used by the church and part of me was saying "I remember them doing that." And another part saying "Why didn't I put that together myself? I knew about that technique." All I can say is I am very grateful that someone has written a book dedicated to understanding the process of de-conversion. So thank you.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll be moving back to Anchorage, AK and would like to find like-minded people there. I'll most likely start at the UU fellowship. All the best!
