"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find anything that agrees with reason and is conductive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. - "Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha), 563-483 B.C.

Creationism is so tiresome, but this Aussie take on the wowcrazy Creation Museum and its originator Ken Ham (who is also responsible for Answers in Genesis) is just so hilarious I had to share it, by Slacktivist at http://www.slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/2009/08/land-of-oz.html.

The Gift of Old Age

Posted on January 8, 2009 at 4:30am 3 Comments

I received this in my email this morning and although I am not yet old - though rapidly approaching it - it summed up my philosophy of life pretty nicely (I already recognise myself in a lot of it!). This is how I want to be in my old age and know that when my time comes to slip this mortal coil and return to oblivion, I will have enjoyed it to the last - life is too short to do otherwise!

"Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life,… Continue

The hidden mechanism of Evolution

Article published on Bio Medicine on 11/11/2008 by Kitta MacPherson of Princeton University.

Evolution's new wrinkle

A team of Princeton University scientists has discovered that chains of proteins found in most living organisms act like adaptive machines, possessing the ability to control their own evolution.

The research, which appears to offer evidence of a hidden mechanism guiding the way biological organisms respond to the forces of natural… Continue

Part 2: The Victory of the Church over Galileo

From A HISTORY OF THE WARFARE OF SCIENCE WITH THEOLOGY IN CHRISTENDOM by ANDREW DICKSON WHITE: This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN & the entire book is available on Internet Infidels.

While news of triumphant attacks upon him and upon the truth he had established were coming in from all parts of Europe, Galileo prepared a careful treatise in the form of a dialogue, exhibiting the arguments for… Continue

You've reminded me I was planning to update my introduction and tidy it up a bit. Thanks.

I'm glad everyone is getting such a kick out of the pumpkins. took about a weeks work to do them all. I have gadgets that do all the hard work. I got to do the fun bit. This year I'm thinking I might do a theme. I've got a few stencils for "The Nightmare Before Christmas" I wouldn't mind having a stab at...

The secret to pumpkin carving in my limited experience is 1) Power-tools. 2) sharp knives. 3) a really big spoon. 4.) patience

Regarding 1 & 2

1) 'Pumpkin gutter' Drill Attachment

2) Metal Carving Saws
http://www.zombiepumpkins.com/shop-protool.php

The rest of my carving kit, I got from a model shop and a haberdashery (for the needles) and the big spoon I liberated from the kitchen.

I'm going to be uploading some photos, hopefully next week, of a trip I took to Switzerland walking in the alps. They are a different sort of spectacular to the Pumpkins. ;)

Hi Crystal. Thanks for the compliments. The Brights took Sisyphus for their Dec. newsletter but I've had no other feedback until now. "Whetherland" is going to be a long term project, I suspect, as new ideas turn up. It plain baffles me that people are so unquestioning. Normal human development (trust me, I'm a father) goes quickly from what? to why? at a young age. How do people get so stunted?
I think I'm going to like it "here". Playing idea ping-pong with aware people is stimulating.

Like minded among atheist is a fallacy. We come from various levels of society and political viewpoints. Not believing in a god is not a strong enough bond to promote communities. Similar beliefs are, however. Such as Humanist, Brights or some other common philosophical belief. The problem is that beliefs like religious beliefs are prone to vary degrees of fundamentalism also, which breeds various levels of prejudice. It is the same game, just a different name.
