I apologize ahead of time - this is gonna be a long post :P
Personally, I generally prefer not to talk about "religion", since there seem to be as many definitions as there are people - there are lots of different aspects to what people…
Coming into this thread anew after a busy week kept me away from A/N for a while...
I agree that there are some very beautiful and even constructive elements to each religion. But as a whole, the ick far outweighs the good. Many an otherwise Xian…
I think I may have disagreed with just about everything you wrote. The catalyst for positive change is typically economic prosperity and education...not religion (at least IMHO). I personally hate religion.
That's probably a fair comparison. My mom occasionally recounts a story about me as a child, a time I corrected a kid at a birthday party for calling sherbet "ice cream." She always laughs when she tells it, and says she is glad…
(And yes, I realize I'm replying in a very timely manner to this thread... I've been working on the scholarly paper component of my thesis for most of the day, and my email alerts pop up when I get a response... desperately seeking…
Interpretation, interpretation, interpretation. Why would someone have faith in something that can supposedly be interpreted a billion ways? Couldn't god in his infinite wisdom have given the writers of religious texts a little better…
And RE: "tolerance"... Who wants to live in a world where we all go about superficially "tolerating" one another? I sure don't. I want deeper, richer relationships than that. And so I try to empathize with folks who see the…
Sonny: I hear your critique, but where we have the most authority is in how we choose to respond to such violence. We can either respond in kind with violence (which transcends physical manifestations to include words and attitudes), or we can -…
I'm 22 years old and live in Chicago, IL. I'm a member of the American Humanist Association and voting member of the Secular Student Alliance, writing a thesis paper on storytelling and a novel for my almost-completed Master of Arts in Religion, doing work for the Interfaith Youth Core, working toward a post-graduate certificate in Spiritual Direction (making me the first openly non-theist person to do so at the Jesuit Catholic school I'm enrolled in), doing radio with Chicago Public Radio's Vocalo.org, being a staff writer for Jettison Quarterly, and learning large life lessons. Also, did I mention that beer plays a significant role in all this?
As you might have guessed from the work that I do, I am fascinated by religion. I am passionate in exploring its role in our cultural milieu, why people desire answers and meaning, and so on. I work as an interfaith cooperation facilitator because I think that, whether we like it or not, religion isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so it is imperative that people of different beliefs learn how to not only coexist but form mutually-inspiring relationships of cooperation, not just tolerance. And while I do not believe in God myself, I appreciate the positive contributions of religion and the religious. I do not wish to see the abolition of religious thought.
I realize this is a controversial stance among some non-theists, and I welcome conversation on the subject. Please check out my blog at nonprophetstatus.com.

Welcome... this is a great site for socializing and network with other nonbelievers. This site is growing, just like our cause.
Feel free to throw questions to me or reach out to me for anything. I am looking to network with other Atheists and spread proper critical thinking to others and grow our non-believing groups.Welcome... this is a great site for socializing and network with other nonbelievers. Hi and a friendly welcome to Chris Steadman from Chicago.
We are pleased to see you here among the sensible, rational people of this world.
This is the greatest atheist/humanist meeting place with its 14,000 bright people like you who recognise religion for the superstition and brainwashing fraud that it is---
and that gods exist only as fictions inside people's heads.
