However, if you pressed me, I’d say the purpose of life is joy in the present moment,

Heaven knows I'm confused now

The idea of heaven (or paradise) sounds so...heavenly. And yet when I think about it, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

The idea of heaven implies a place where there is nothing but happiness. So to me, that means that I will be among the friends and family that I love. I don't think I can be happy all the time if I'm always on my own. Certainly when I have gone to Christian funerals, the implication has been that we're going to see the deceased person in heaven. On the other hand,… Continue

Dude, where's our Bible?

Posted on March 21, 2009 at 11:00pm 7 Comments

Having just gotten back from vacation it struck me how good a job the people of Gideon's bible have done of distributing their bible. It's truly amazing that pretty much every hotel room I stay in (in the U.S. at least) contains a copy. The unfortunate thing is that they (Gideon) seem to have somewhat of a monopoly at the moment. Wouldn't it be great if there was a book (or maybe even a pamphlet?) sitting next to their bible that provided details of what non-religious people believe, based on… Continue

To the Religious: Deep Down, You Probably Already Know That Your Religion is False

Posted on December 15, 2008 at 7:52pm 4 Comments

When push comes to shove, there aren't many religious people who truly believe in their religion. The litmus test is how a person feels about death itself.

Assuming you are a religious person, allow me to ask you a few questions:

Firstly, how do you feel about your own death? Are you afraid of dying or are you looking forward to it? Does death seem like a wonderful journey? Or are you scared?

How about any friends and family that you currently have that are… Continue

I Went to Church Today - So Sue Me

Posted on November 14, 2008 at 11:01pm 5 Comments

On my way to work today in Chicago I took a detour and stopped off at a local church. I sat there for a while and closed my eyes for a few minutes. I happened to be next to the confessional boxes and some fake flickering candles. The building itself was really impressive, lots of marble, and it was extremely peaceful. I thought to myself, these religious folks actually do have something, you know. If you take away all the words and beliefs and repeated gestures and intolerance for other faiths,… Continue

Good article, "your lifestyle has already been designed" by David Cain

Some interesting observations about the 40-hr (or longer) work week and what it does to us:http://www.raptitude.com/2010/07/your-lifestyle-has-already-been-designed/One of the best paragraphs (bold text added by me):But the 8-hour workday is too profitable for big business, not because of the amount of work people get done in eight hours (the average office worker gets less than three hours of actual work…See More

How doctors die

http://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2011/11/30/how-doctors-die/ideas/nexus/From the article:"It’s not a frequent topic of discussion, but doctors die, too. And they don’t die like the rest of us. What’s unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little. For all the time they spend fending off the deaths of others, they tend to be fairly serene when faced with…See More
