Nate replied to Brent Thompson's discussion Atheist Service Committee?
"It's not proselytising, it's correcting a misrepresentation of atheism as immoral, self-serving and hedonistic. I appreciate your point of view. But do you really think that atheist charity will change that perception? Isn't that…"

Chrys Stevenson replied to Brent Thompson's discussion Atheist Service Committee?
"Many atheists post here, and elsewhere, stating their difficulty in finding truly secular charities to donate to - charities that they can be sure won't use their money to proselytise religion. Dale's Foundation fills an important gap.…"

"***what makes me angry is that we actually have to PROVE we're good people*** Exactly. You can quote all the prison statistics and studies you like (such as the low divorce/crime rates in Norway and Sweden) which show in favour of atheists, but…"

"How is this different than religions doing charity work to enhance their public image or establish their piety? What's wrong with looking out for one another because of the awareness that we're all we have? "...promote a godless way…"

Chrys Stevenson replied to Brent Thompson's discussion Atheist Service Committee?
"Dale McGowan has just launched Foundation Beyond Belief a new secular charity for atheists and humanists. The idea of extending this into a service organization as well sounds worth running by Dale. Why don't you contact him - he has a page…"

"Good point on the promotion of godlessness. Perhaps just performing service with a sign somewhere showing who is doing the work would be the best approach."

Martin Allen replied to Brent Thompson's discussion Atheist Service Committee?
"I like organisations that are open to people irrespective of beliefs. In the UK one example would be the Samaritans helpline for the depressed and suicidal. But to have a similar organisation exclude people based on their religious beliefs, well,…"

Atheist Service Committee?

I live in the Philadelphia area and have become familiar with the work of the American Friends Service Committee. This is a Quaker affiliated organization that promotes their peace agenda through programs. They also perform community service and go to areas of need to provide food and shelter without, like some religions, without promoting a religious dogma.I was thinking that perhaps we nontheists need such an organization. An organization that provided service without dogma. Perhaps a sign…See More

Brent Thompson replied to smb12321's discussion What to do when religion helps
"One of the reasons I see among those who commit crimes is the belief that the fault lies outside of themselves. A common response to conviction is what they did wrong was get caught. Even when they know what they do is wrong there is always an…"

Brent Thompson replied to Sentient Biped's discussion Tattoos - Are the godless more likely to enhance what nature started?
"My first exposure to tattoos was as a nursing student in the 1970s at a VA hospital. The tattoos had become mostly green blobs on the guys' dried out skin. I always have that image when I see a young person showing off her latest mark. I change…"

Brent Thompson replied to St Jimmy's discussion Atheists: No God, no reason, just whining
"Ms. Allen says "What atheists don't seem to realize is that even for believers, faith is never easy in this world of injustice, pain and delusion. Even for believers, God exists just beyond the scrim of the senses. So, atheists, how about…"

Brent Thompson replied to Dr. Ned Kelly's discussion After the Rapture messages delivered
"Brilliant. I was thinking the other day that another money making idea would be to make large bets on the time of the Rapture. For centuries Christians have believed it's just around the corner. My idea is to make them put their money where…"

Brent Thompson replied to Brent Thompson's discussion Bought "God That Wasn't There". Didn't like it much.
"I was feeling bad that an atheist's work was being criticized but I changed my mind. Just like minorities who say they have to be better than the majority group in their endeavors, so do atheists. We must be producing high quality documentaries…"
