Bob Batton replied to Jennifer W's discussion Do you believe Jesus existed?
"Your question about Paul interests me. Paul (Saul) was basically an apocalyptic preacher who believed in the imminent end of days and taught that nothing else in human endeavor mattered anymore in the face of it. In this respect he is like the Jesus…"

Bob Batton replied to Fox Lee's discussion Not Unlike Religion... in the group Atheists who love Science!
"Senator James Inhof (R: Oklahoma) promotes bad science. He knows very well that it's bad, or a least poorly done. He takes money shamelessly for promoting bad science and misleading his constituents. I'll bet he's also a 'born…"

Bob Batton replied to Jennifer W's discussion Do you believe Jesus existed?
"I'm in substantial agreement with Fabio. I will of course concede that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. However, the Jesus of the four canonical gospels strikes me as a complete fabrication, as is the 'divine' Christ of…"

Recovering from Religion

Unless you were raised by atheist parents, you probably had some recovering to do when you left religion. The purpose of RR is to provide a landing place for people when they jump from religion. With local support groups throughout the US, Canada, UK, and Australia, and real-time resources accessible to everyone, RR is where to turn when faith has lost its luster.See More

Profile Information

About Me
I was an on-again-off-again agnostic since childhood, but I became a total nontheist in 1986 after graduating from two consecutive theological seminary programs (would you believe it!). Since that time, I've been a committed advocate for complete separation of church and state, opposing any effort to relax it. Richard Dawkins is one of my favorite science writers. I also like Daniel C. Dennett. My sense is that the concept of the "god virus" may well prove to be a major paradigm shift.
While I never tried to make a career of biblical criticism I have made a hobby of it, along with making a lot of changes to the baggage of infantile beliefs which I brought into my adulthood. I was looking for a way to make sense of the bible; and I found a way, which is essentially to give up trying to make sense of it. So I turned to making light of it.
My family all live in or near Louisville, KY, where I last taught medical anatomy. I have four children: Elizabeth (my oldest) and her husband are both professional opera singers who, accordingly, are hardly ever at home; Katherine is a nurse; George is a computer geek and works for Insight Communications, and as a hobby is a competing jiu jitsu wrestler; Robert is totally disabled and lives with his mother. I retired in 1999 and moved to Eau Claire, WI, where my sister and her husband live.
School/College/University
Arizona State University/Indiana University/Columbia University
Profession
Retired: medical anatomy/neurobiology professor (PhD) for 35 years; Hobbies include: microscopy, biblical criticism (PhD), classical music, geology. Things I collect: minerals, meteorites, fossils, books, classic swords; Other things I like: gourmet food, orchids, animals, old manuscript facsimilies
